Just a quick one guys, anyone know where I can purchase a fishing rod holder? Like the tubular ones that you mount to your bullbar? Ive had a bit of a quick look round but havent had any luck. I live in Sydney if that helps.

Cheers, Jay

Probably because in NSW they are illegal to fit to a bull bar now so not as many places carry them. Try getting a mate in the metal trade to make some up for you it will probably only take scrap and they are easy.

As far as I am aware tubular fishing rod holders that clamp on to a bullbar have been illegal Australia wide since January 2002.

They are legal in Qld provided they have rods in them.
When not transporting fishing rods they must be removed from the vehicle.
Can't even swing them under the bull bar.
I know because I was pulled up yesterday (again)...bugger!

TJM sell them, they hold four rods and even come in various colours if you have a colour coded bull bar. They come with a big red warning label that says ' Off road use only' so check your local laws. Tjm have stores in Narellan, Penrith, Carlton and Hornsby.
Or check out their website, they have pics of this product.

I'm with Willie, cept I think it goes back further. My understanding is it's illegal to have anything protruding forward of the bar. Lots address this issue by revolving around behind when not in use, but careful I believe the wallopers are red hot on this one ... regardless of which state.Rosco

They are not legal. If TJM say for off road only what the heck are you supposed to do with the gear until you get off road, not a very bright idea - shame on TJM for selling them.
I use the 100mm PVC storm water pipe from the local plumbing shop, cut length to suite your rods, glue a close end and screw cap end on each end and clamp it to the roof bars. Mine holds a 2 piece beach rod plus 4 x 6ft rods, keep them in rod bags to stop rattling. Carpe Diem

I had one that I made from off cuts I found in the bin at the local exhaust shop.

Used it once or twice but it was such a pain that I junked it.

My understanding is that the new ADR for bull bars prohibits anything projecting beyond the front of the bar this includes antennae mounts, rod holders etc.

Just look at the new model bars from ARB and TJM and youll soon see the effort they have gone to to keep them tidy and safe.

It's always been a bit of a mystery to me... What is the value of carrying rods (with reels?) on the part of the car that is guaranteed to catch all the stones, dust, bugs and water? P'raps there's an aspect of this that I haven't thought about.

When I travel on long trips away, I take the reels off the rods and tape the rods above the grab handles inside the truck. If you have a recent model car, the "felt" roof lining makes a really effective attachment point for velcro strips. So if you get some velcro strips and bind the rods together you can then tie them down on the grab handles and use velcro to the roof lining to stop the ends from rattling. Out of the way, safe from prying eyes (hands), and easy to get out again. You can store about 4 rods (depends on size) on each side.

I've used this method on long trips up north (2 months +) with a Pajero and a Patrol and never had a problem. No damage to the roof lining either - or at least none that I've noticed.

Tight lines.
