Dasher Des
G'day all,
I have heard from a second hand source that camping was not permitted on the
Gary Junction Highway. Is this correct as I belive that it will take at least several days to complete this road.
Thanks in advance for your assistance

Probably no-one but don't want to make life more difficult for those who follow should it be banned. Thanks for your comment anyway.

There are plenty of opportunities to
camp, with
Well 33 near
Kunawarritji and Jupiter
Well being popular and pleasant
places to stay. Transit permit required.

Des
Camp where you like, who will stop you, and who will really care.
We did, and had no worries.
One night near Jupiter
Well, on the side of the road, and the other night just a little East of
Papunya
Cheers

Hi Al
When we did the SBJT a number of years ago, we had to
camp on the side of the road between
Kintore and
Papunya. There were many great spots to choose from and we were
well off of the road. Having said that there were a number of cars that drove past during the night while we had the
camp fire going that would have been visible from the road and the locals that would have been driving at night did not stop and say we should not be camping there.
Cheers
Stephen

Thanks Stephen,
I'm still working on the photo's and the book. I'm getting the book through
Gluepot but it has been difficult getting there because of the wet weather. my daughter will be back out there in a fortnight and will get it then.
cheers
Al.

G'day Des,
The 2 permits required are (last year)
Central Lands Council – Northern Territory
http://www.clc.org.au/OnlinePermits/ApplicantDetails.aspx?0=TransitPapunya to WA Border
Glen Helen to
Papunyahttp://www.dia.wa.gov.au/Entry-Permits/Apply-For-A-Permit.aspxGary Junction Rd
I never saw any other camping restrictions than the 3 days to cross one section.
- NGAANYATJARRA COUNCIL
RESERVE ENTRY PERMIT APPLICATION - they allow a maximum of 3days to cross their section.
There was a restriction on the number of vehicles, I think if more than 6 they wanted the convoy broken up.
There was no charge, but quite a delay in getting one of them and they pin you down to the dates of travel.
We had a couple of policemen call into our first
camp at night west of
Papunya,
they had a big yarn, were very friendly and told us the best
places to buy fuel. Mainly the times of fuel supply at
Kintore were not the same as the map states. There are alcohol restrictions as
well.
Cheers,
Bill

Yes Bill, the WA permit is a hassle - especially as you need to apply so far in advanced and be specific about dates. The NT one was much more civilised - apply on line, permit emailed by return, and flexible dates.

Bill, your DIA link for permits does not work for me, and last night i could not find the application part of their web site at all. Something there seems to have gone missing. Is anyone else having trouble with the on line system?

Hello Des,
The
Gary Junction Road is one of our favourite outback roads, I hope that you enjoy it too.
We travelled with Bucky who posted a reply before..and
the spot east of
Papunya was beside the Derwent River about 20kms east of
Papunya.
There are lots of good
bush camp opportunities - some have been mentioned already eg Jupiters
Well. There is a good
camp spot west of
Papunya, not sure how far but its at the first
Len Beadell plaque. Its amongst trees and is very roomy.
About 30kms from the WA border (heading westwards you come to the
Dover Hills and groves of Desert Oak. We found a
good camp by following a track off to the south side of the track up to an
old quarry.
I hope you enjoy your journey. The two times we've been on the
Gary Junction its been in good condition for the most of it. We found that it took us three days/two nights to cross and reached
Marble Bar on the third night.
If you can detour to
Carawine Gorge that is another beautiful spot to
camp and enjoy a break. The turn off is just as you meet the bitumen after being on the Telfer
Mine Road and then you follow the signs...
Best wishes
Viv

Hi Viv
Your
Dover Hills spot was one of my very favourite nights - i think my current rig
pic was taken there.
A good roomy spot on the NT side is Liebig
Bore - at a Beadell
Plaque near
Mount Liebig. That sounds like the one you describe. The
bore is no longer in operation.
Although there were lots of other good
places along the way, all we stayed at had been mentioned by others previous to our trip.
