I have heard leprechaun is the closest caravan park to town with no mozzies and sand flies. Is there anything wrong with it?
Old threads have such differing views on Darwin caravan parks. We will have three small children with us and do not want plane noise. We do not have a caravan so robbie robbins reserve is out. Any ideas

It is now closed, trust me you are not missing out, it was a s... hole. OKA or malak are the closest followed by shady glen then hidden valley then the Palms.
When are you here and how fussy are you? ;-)

we will be there in the second week of june. I heard OKA and malak and hidden valley are under the flight path. Other people have said shady glen is awful. What is your opinion on shady glen? We are coming to see Darwin (night markets, crocolicius etc). It is our first stop on 6 month trip of NT, WA and SA.

We stayed at Shady Glen in July last year when Operation Pitch Black was in full swing. Magnificent aircraft those FA18's F111, F16 etc but a tad loud when taking off and landing in groups of 16 with a 10 minute span. What I'm saying is, Shady Glen is also under the flight path especially for RAAF flights.

Not all sites are shady but most are fine. Some are very tight for 20+ foot vans. Amenities are cleaned at very odd times (peak times) but are clean and ok in my opinion.

Shady Glen is right next door to the Darwin Showgrounds and yes you guessed it, The Darwin Show was on when we stayed there and Sideshow Alley is just across the fence. It quietened down after 11:00pm.

Not a bad park apart from the outside influences mentioned above. Malak and Oka are next to each other and don't take bookings. You have to take your chances and queue up each day to get in. I'd stay there again but I believe Lee Point is the pick of the bunch.

CLARIFICATION:
I meant that I'd stay at Shady Glen again, it is certainly not a dump by any means

Hi valerie g,
Yes the Leprechaun is the closest park to the CBD about 5 to 8 minutes out of town by car also on the bus route.
It certainly isnt the most modern of parks, ammenities are fair & cleaned daily. The park is very popular with backpackers it does have a smallish pool. The sites arent huge.
When we stayed there 18 months ago there were war games on (us & the yanks) light aircraft & helicopters flight directly overhead going all hours of the night.... you sort of get used to it. When 'the games' finished aircraft movement greatly reduced, mainly light commercial aircraft & mainly in the morning say from 0600hrs.
Not trying to bag this park but it is fairly basic......maybe OK if thats what you are looking for.
The other 'park' we stayed at was Robbie Robbins.
Enjoy your stay in Darwin its a great place....HEAPS to see

Sadly as reported above, Leprechaun is closed. We found the park quite acceptable; they found us a nice big site at short notice, staff and owners were very helpful all round. The amenities block was ancient but is was regularly cleaned and even with a full park, no waiting for showers and the water was always hot. Shame it is closed - we would have chosen it again if going back to Darwin.

Hi Elly and thanks for the greeting. Briefly; I hope all goes well with you. We are not travelling as the drought is making our life hard. PM is limited to paid up members only, and the Moderators will censor us for chit chat in a thread :(

If your camping in small van, try the TV transmitter towers near Botanical gardens, short stays are exceptable, no showers or toilets, TV Security guys are OK, and will keep local nasties away. Or try Mindil beach if adventureous.Good Luck..

Have you checked out the options reported on Badger's?

Not all parks have been listed here.

Most have plane noise - but maybe not if you go out to Howard Springs. We were lucky with Leprechaun as it was so close to the air field, but not under direct flight path and very quiet at night. Shame it has gone - I haven't been able to find out why it closed.

Hi, the reason I didn't mention Howard Springs is because they are looking at which park is the closest.

Hi Lyndon &, do you know why Leprechaun closed? Is it just the camping area, or the motel units as well? The location was so good, and with a new amenities block, it could have been a great park.

Hi Motherhen

I have to admit I never stayed there but heard from several different sources that it wasn’t to flash. Was told the motel was at ½ star standards and that due to the hi proportion of backpackers in the camp area stuff would go missing. As said, this came from several different sources. The whole thing is locked up, as you said a pity due to proximity to town. My guess is the real estate is worth so much that is will soon be redeveloped, don’t quote me on that though.

Regards Lyndon

Thanks Lyndon

There were heaps of overseas back packers staying there, and apart from the fact that they filled the washing lines and never collected it (we had to use our airer instead) and the European custom of walking through camp sites rather than around, they were fine when we were there. We had the F250 parked on the other side of the annex slab as it was a roomy site they found for us. We put the washing and our outside chairs and tables as a barrier across our annex slab, as under very shady trees we didn't put the annex out, to try and give them a hint. Nothing "walked away". We left this all there to 'mark our spot' when we took our caravan to get the air con repaired. I wonder where all those backpackers stay now?

The proprietor (owner?) was also very good when we wanted to use a phone line for a medical equipment download. They gave top service.

There were two swimming pools; one for the motel and one for the campers - both kept immaculately clean.

The park looked more inviting than "dusty glen" down the road.

What is Lee Point like these days? That was our back up choice, and we had heard that it was very run down (2009). What is the aeroplane noise situation there?

Hello Valerie,

KOA and Malak are not under a flight path, however they are close to an airport. maybe have a look on Google earth. I really don't think it would be a bother. The parks are next to each other and are clean and seem to be nice. I believe they have the same owner. There is a coles nearby and they have a bus service from the park to mindle beach markets. They have a pool also.
BP palms looks OK from what I have seen. Its a little further out but probably takes just a long to get to town as the 2 above. I know they use to have one of those "jumping pillows"? in the playground however I don't know if it is still there. They also have a nice pool. I think even though it is further out it would be more under the flight path than KOA and Malak. Be warned in the dry which is very soon they will be booked out so you should book in advance. The Lee point (same owner) will have sandflies.

Cheers Tony

I stayed at Shady Glen when I first got to Darwin years ago, it was expensive and also had a lot of plane noise. so bad you couldnt talk on the phone when they were going over,

I moved out to the Palms and stayed there for about 6 or 7 months. Its a bit further out but it was still a quick trip into the centre of Darwin.

My info might be a bit outdated , I was there about 10 years ago

Lived in Darwin for a year in our van. Stayed at Free Spirit which used to be BP Palms. Has Great amenities jumping castle and 3 pools, also brand new camp kitchen, but has got very pricey. It is now a Big 4 Park. Was up in Darwin in January and heard it is almost completely booked out for the dry season. Not that far out really from all you would want to see and do.

Malak very average with a high proportion of permanents, but has pool and closer to city. Very run down

Hidden Valley. Smaller park. Can have ensuite if desired. We stayed there for a while. Nice facilities but only small pool to cater for all. Closer to town. We found it very nice.
Don't know much about the others but whatever you choose to run with book early as they are usually packed out at that time of the year.
Hope some of this helps
Cheers Elly

Valerie, have you looked at the Coolalinga Caravan Park. Seems to be reasonably priced compared to some of the others.

Has anyone stayed there or have any knowledge of the park?

Checked it out May last year, lots of do & don't rules.

We went back to the Big XXXX at Howard Springs, reasonably priced. Has a Pool, camp kitchen, clean toilet blocks and friendly staff ....

Also is quiet and not really any noticeable plane noise, I would go there again.
