Hi
I have been trying to sell my camper for awhile on different web sites when I got this message.

Hi there,
I am interested in buying this, please let me know if it is still available for sale and will you accept an offer of $27,500?
Cheers!
Adam

I said yes.

Thanks mate,
I really appreciate your getting back so soon,I am away at sea at the moment, on the west alliance submersible to be precise,I would have loved to come and view this personally but I wont be back on land till June.

I am buying this for my brother as a surprise gift,he will love this so so much, please do end the auction on ebay and I want this delivered asap, but I have already talked to a freighting company that will handle the pick up and delivery to my brother as well.

As regards the payment, I will only be able to pay through paypal and this is due to to the fact that paypal is the easiest means for me to pay as I do not have access to my bank account through the internet as I need to get some info confirmed at the bank before they can activate it for me, but I have it attached to my paypal account, if you have a paypal acc, all I will need will be your paypal email address and if not, it is very easy to set up at www.paypal.com.au, I will be expecting your reply.
Adam

I could smell a rat here so a rang the ACCC and PayPal. Paypal said watch out if he goes on to say he wants to put money in western union.

I then contacted him and said there was a limit of $12500 on a paypal transaction and could I have his phone no. so I could talk about the camper trailer.

He said he had a limit of $55000 and because he was out at sea no phone calls.

Anyway he said the money's been put in my account plus $850 extra. But the money won't be able to be withdrawn until I take the $850 to western union to pay for a transport company.

I replied I will deliver the camper for nothing to the destination to save on transport costs. I was leading him on just for fun even though my wife said to forget it!

His last reply was that his brother was in NZ and I wouldn't be able to deliver!!!!!

I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience. You can see how they make their money.

Yeah we had somebody contact us when trying to sell a car, with the same sort of thing, except that they were buying from China and wanted it shipped there.
My nephew just recently had a similar one.

There are lots of these scams around and you did well to spot it.Well done on leading them on too, I must admit to doing the same once. I asked them to send me a money order first that confirmed their address and account details and that was the last I heard of them. I dont think a money order will do this anyways but it was enough.

Good pickup on that one as we are in the middle of a selling/buying spree and these guys do come up with some classic attempts.

Bonz - well I'll be

So that's where it went, I just could not remember where i sent that MO to, I should hang out here more often.

Hope all is well down your end and with a bit of luck we may catch up at Silverton, if you are going. NB the new wheels!

Yes Lachie it’s a common scam and has been mentioned on the forum a couple of times previously. The same type of scam was tried on my brother selling his camper trailer. Payment via paypal. Got an official looking transaction receipt and all. The people contacted him and said his dad had made the payment for him and had foolishly paid $1500 too much, could my brother please refund it. Bro smelt a rat and said, “certainly as soon as the money has cleared into my account, I’ll refund it”. End of story....no money of course. A well set up scam. You have to be so careful these days particularly on the net. Scammers abound and even on these forums people can build a character or personality that bears little or no resemblance to the truth.

Cheers, Mick

You need to be alert if you are buying as well.

We are looking for a Golden Retriever pup and answered an online 'For Sale' ad which said the litter was in Rockingham, not very far from us. We replied expressing interest in visiting to view the pups.

Here is a copy of their reply.....

Hi

Thank you very much for the reply, unfortunately I am presently
located in (Perth), where I came for a medical research
project with my husband, which is going to take us 7months. We are
very busy and we do not have enough time to be with the puppies and
secondly our apartment does not allow us to keep pets so we have no
option than to give them out. I am looking forward to adopting my
puppies because I believe they are more important than money if you
know what I mean.. The value I place on them is as big as any human
and I treat them as such.. KELLY is11 weeks two days old , WILLY 15 weeks So if
you are still interested in the puppies, I can only arrange for them
to be shipped to you and you will take care of just the shipping cost
which will be450AUD or one and 800AUD for both of them including cost of
puppy, all papers. The paper will include change of ownership document
from my names to your names, kc registration papers and all vet
documents necessary.. So if you are ready and serious to get them, you
should send to me your
Full names:::::::::::::::
Home address::::::::::::::::
City::::::::::
Post code:::::
Phone number::::::::::::and
nearest airport to your home::::::::::::::::::::::::::
::::::;

These information will be used to register the puppies and also for
the change of ownership documents. So let me know as soon as possible
if you want them shipped to you so that I can stop all others from
contacting me. Thank you for replying back and hope to read from you
shortly.once i have all the details i shall then book for the delivery
and once i am done with that the agency are going to contact you on
how to make the payment to them upfront and also how the delivery will
be done at your home, the agency will email you the delivery details
and also give you a call in regard of the shipping.
Waiting

A litter of pups...one is 11 weeks old, another is 15 weeks...what th'?

Needless to say we took this no further.

PS. we have now located a breeder in SA whose dam is having pups in late April. Our name is on one of her boys.

Cheers Neil

Sorry, now I getcha, only a scammer's pups would be born over 4 weeks ay.

The reference in the scammers reply to "advise me of your nearest airport" was a givaway too when they are supposedly only 180km from here.

I am convinced the SA breeder is genuine.

What is the odds? About 6 to 1 of responses from scammers to responses from genuine people ANYWHERE you advertise anything these days?

Lachie, this type of scam has been going on for in excess of ten years and is becoming more popular with automated replies to advertisements.

just have a look in the classifieds section in the sydney telegraph and you will see the same type of advert for cars, vans, boats etc. all worded the same and all have extremely cheap price. they are obvious to me but what i want to know is why they are not so obvious to the newspaper. if they are done online, surely they have a quality assurance program to vet these things. if i can spot them easily then why cant they and in doing so the paper will save some poor sole his hard earned because he was too trusting of these SOBs

You don't even have to advertise to be part of a scam,

We breed Aust Cattle Dogs in the USA and about half of our pups are sold to Europe where our breeding kennel is well known as we have several search and rescue dogs.

Recently we got a request for a pup for potential search and rescue, and this scammer was good and had thoroughly researched us and the breed. Went back and forward with emails and all looked legit, said they would send the money via paypal including the money for airfreight and documentation.

They said the $ had been sent including an extra $2,000 for the air freight, then got an email saying that a friend was in Los Angeles and would pick up the dog and could we refund the $2,000.

So be careful even if you don't advertise.

Bruce
