Kimberley Parks and
Reserves update
Due to the extensive, widespread, and continuing wet season in the
Kimberley the national parks and
reserves managed by the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) remain closed to the general public and commercial operators.
East
Kimberley:
Purnululu National Park:
Purnululu National Park remains closed. The south of the
park is open to the fly drive operation. East
Kimberley Tours are currently the only E class commercial operator operating in this regard.
There has been extensive damage to the Mabel Downs access track into
Purnululu National Park as
well as the internal road network. Whilst location specific site inspections are yet to take place to determine the extent of the damage, it is almost certain that the
park will not be open before
Easter.
Wolfe
Creek Crater Meteorite Reserve remains CLOSED.
Parry Lagoons
Nature Reserve remains CLOSED.
Mirima National
Park is OPEN. Visitors are advised to take care when accessing the
park.
North
Kimberley:
Mitchell River, Lawley River and
Drysdale River national parks remain CLOSED.
West
Kimberley:
Geikie Gorge National Park:
Geikie Gorge National Park remains CLOSED. At this stage, due to the continued flooding of the
Fitzroy River catchment it is highly unlikely that the DEC bout tour operation will commence on 1 May 2011. DEC will keep commercial operators and visitor centers informed of any changes in this regard.
Tunnel Creek and
Windjana Gorge national parks remain CLOSED:
King Leopold Range Conservation
Park:
The King Leopold Range Conservation
Park, including Lennard Gorge,
Bell Gorge and Silent Grove campground remain CLOSED.
DEC will provide further advice when the access status of the parks changes. At this stage, due to the ongoing monsoonal activity all parks will remain closed up to and including the
Easter holiday period.
