Can you give me some good suggestions on where we can camp en route to Port Augusta. We will be driving from Rye Victoria and want to do a long drive on our first day. We have a tent and will be camping but will need a powered site. We want to get past Murray Bridge. I thought Glenelg would be good. We will camp 2 nights at our first stop. Hopefully there is a beautiful spot where we can stay on the start of our adventure. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I'll second that. Close enough to Glenelg to make use of the facilities but just far enough away to avoid the rat race.

If you're after something closer to town and along the River Torrens, I'd recommend Levi Caravan park. Walking distance to the CBD.

Have you considered an alternative route to going through Adelaide? We live eastern Melbourne suburbs and when going or coming from anywhere beyond Port Augusta, always go via Bendigo, Mildura, Renmark, Morgan, Burra, Peterborough, Horrocks Pass to Pt Augusta. We usually make Mildura (nice caravan park at Gol Gol on the NSW side) or Renmark, on the first night. There are a couple of pleasant caravan parks right beside the Murray at Renmark.
We find this route avoids city driving hassles, and is an interesting and varied drive.

As Riverlanders. We can say that it has cooled down enough that the mozzies dont seem a problem at the moment. We can recommend the parks on the riverfront at Renmark.

Thank you for your response. After much looking at the maps, we have decided to drive to Port Wakefield. It is a huge drive for the 1st day, but from then on we can take it easy. It gets us off to a good start. I was leaning towards Mildura way, but the King won and we are going to Port Wakefield. Thanks again for your tips.

Just the occasional one. No worse than for April in a normal year. Id still use aerogard if outside at night but they arent bad enough to spoil your holiday. Come up the river and enjoy yourselves it is well worth the trip. The Murray is beautiful at the moment.

I would certainly not claim to be an expert, as I've only transited through Port Wakefield, but I'm not sure it is somewhere you would spend a couple of nights. If you were looking for somewhere around there to spend two nights I would suggest the Clare Valley between Auburn and Clare. This puts you in amongst the wineries. Camps Australia shows power available at the Auburn Recreation Ground and Leasingham Village Caravan Park.
