How long do turbo's last?

I have 200,000 k on a courier and the turbo is starting to whistle when I back off.
Had a so called expert tell me that they should be rebuilt at about that klm's.
Ive never heard it before , always thought that they would last more than that.
Bye the way the vech is a 2005 courier.
Thanks

Bushy..

I had the Mazda version in NZ and it developed a whistle...it turned out to be a turbo exhaust flange gasket and was a quick easy repair. Hopefully yours will be a simple fix rather than a full overhaul.
Cheers

Me old Mitsubishi Cordia Turbo had 385 K's on the clock before I sold it and it was still good.

I did have a whistle at about 185 K's and as stated it was the exhaust leaking near the manifild,

Cheers.

There is a company called turbo engineering that I have used and trust. Ask them for an opinion and take your decisions from there. Cheers

I also think it maybe worthwhile checking exhaust and turbo gaskets before thinking the worst. You know your car, how she normally goes, its service and how hard you drive it, so maybe its a simple problem in an older engine. Mine just did it's exhaust gasket and I almost got the rifle out for her but took a breath and all fixed in 2 1/2 hours. I expect over 200K for mine
