G'day all,
We will be leaving
Sydney tomorrow morning towing our 5m 'van. My wife does not like winding, twisting roads, and I was hoping
forum members could advise which road would provide the smoothest route over the mountains.
Obvious options are:
* directly west via
Katoomba
* take the Hume Hwy south-west
* go north to
Newcastle, then west from there
Travel time is less of a consideration as we are not on a timetable to get
home, and the vehicle can pull the van over the mountains okay, so the main criteria is the smoothest, least twisting/winding road with the least ups and downs.
Any and all comments appreciated.
cheers,
glids

Depends where you are coming from in
Sydney, and where west you are going. But Great Western Highway via
Katoomba would sound your best option. If you can be more precise on where from/where to, there might be better options...

We are in Lane Cove heading to
Adelaide, but I'm not too fussed about going out of our way for a smoother ride.

In which case I suspect the Hume Highway will be best for you. From Lane Cove take the M2, stay on when it changes to the M7 and continue as though you are going to
Canberra...In fact once on the M2 if you do nothing you'll end up on the Hume Highway...
Enjy the trip,

I'm guessing you are staying at the Caravan Park, if so there is an entry on to the M2 just up the road.

Agree with The Landy.
The Hume is the best way considering that you are trying to avoid twisty roads. Stay on it until the Wagga turn off after
Gundagai and then I believe you should know the rest of the way
Just remember that the M7 and maybe even the M2 are both electronic tollways. No toll booths. Personally I avoid them as I know
Sydney and what I consider better ways through it.

Geez, I live on the central coast and I'd like to know how to get onto the Hume without going along the M2 and M7 ?????
The M7 is the best part about the whole of
Sydney.....it's one fast way to get thru the joint ( and out of it !! )

Gronk there are heaps of ways.
I lived in
Sydney for half my life. Its a piece of cake. Try the old pre mtotrway day roads. They are still there.

There are lots of road works over the Blue Mts at the moment, and depending on the time of day it can be a slow crawl.
I would do the Hume if you dont want hassells....

I asked the same question on here a few weeks back, Hubby flew to
Sydney to pick up our daughters car and bring it back to WA, Hume Highway was the recommended route which is the way he went. He got
home safe and sound and was glad he took the Hume Highway.
Re thread 84880, For those who helped in that particular thread, he left the airport about 8pm and travelled about 400kls before stopping, all our effort in telling him to book into the motel was in vain. He arrived
home (
Perth) 9am on Tuesday morning. All went
well.
Thanks again to all who helped in the instant.

Many thanks for all the replies.
I have arranged ePass for the car and caravan so the tollways will be no problem. (Usually I avoid tollways, but in
Sydney I think they are good value.)
We are going via the Hume Hwy, and looking forward to the lower traffic densities of
home.
Cheers to all,
glids
