CB

I have recently bought a device that transmits and receives radio waves that are converted into speech that emanates from a loud speaker - all this happensd in the vehicle.
If there is anybody in Adelaide that is experienced in using these types of devices that could take some time to show me the ropes, I'd be grateful

Pleas email me:
adelaidemac@hotmail.com

Thanks
George

Maybe it's just me AdlelaideGeorge, but I have no idea what you are talking about.

Do you mean you purchased a UHF CB and want to know how to use it?

Yes! but I when I post that I am m*******d.

I have very little idea how to use it properly and just wondered if there's a local that could give my wife and I some basic help. I can press the buttons and transmit and recieve but it's all the bells and whistles that bamboozle us.

When I listen to it in my car in Adelaide I just hear a stream of foul language from retards (I know - that's Adelaide for you......!!!!) - I hope it's better once we're out on the open road.

Do you scan all channels when travelling?..or just 18 and 30 (say);
do you always scan repeaters?;
can you scan repeaters (1-8) and still hear 18, 30 etc?

It'll take a while to work all this out methinks

Thanks for replying.

I think you'll find that you get the language in every city as you start to enter it. It's very useful once you get a bit out of town. We've noticed that once you get past the tunnels up the freeway a lot of the crap chatter slows and is gone soon after. When we travel the cb is always on, however as we start to get into the city areas normally end up turning it off as it's usefulness is overwhelmed by pointless dribble.

To be fair on the Bug, they are hardly going to train George if he didn't buy his radio there - even then, they'd want some $ for training (I think an intro workshop is free if you spend $4k on an HF - but UHF for $400 ?.
Hey George - learn as you go - just turn it on once out of town - go open scan (all Ch) to see what happens - once you are sick of that, set up a scan group that includes 18 and 40 for the road (vans and trucks). As for repeaters.... that is a later module in your comms certificate :-o)...... What make and model did you get ?

Hi

it's an ICOM IC-41S. I think having a chat out on the road is a good idea...

Thanks for all the replies

Hi Stephen, Yes, of course it is relatively The Big Smoke. But couldn't resist the dig!

I was born and spent the best part of my life in Adelaide and still have a soft spot for it. In fact now that I am retired and attracted to desert trecking it would be a more central place to live and avoid the long hikes from Qld. However...............

My wife recounts her farmer uncle driving into Nambour and cautioning the kids in the back seat........ "Alright, quieten-down, no talking in the city". Yes,its all relative!

Cheers

George, If you stay in caravan parks or campgrounds keep an eye out for someone with a UHF antenna on their vehicle and get into conversation. Most would be glad to give you advice.
