80ch uhf

A couple of months ago there was traffic on here about the new 80ch UHF stuff that is on the way. Some dealers are now saying it is imminent and others are not sure.

From the ACMA website today:-

"The public consultation period for the discussion paper Spectrum proposals: 403-520 MHz has closed.

The ACMA received 61 submissions to the consultation paper on proposals for future arrangements for the 400 MHz band.

The ACMA is currently considering these submissions. Please direct any questions about this discussion paper to 400MHzreview@acma.gov.au or via telephone to Andrew Stewart on (02) 6219 5238".

So I guess the "need" to get an 80ch UHF is not as immediate as some would have us believe.

The current 40 channels are unchanged, so I can't see any need for an extra 40channels for what I do. For me it's a bit of a yawn.

I agree Phil, The manufacturers must be rubbing their hands together in anticipation of the phase out in a few years... So there will be another 40 empty channels when you are out in the back of nowhere!!! Michael

Gday Michael,
I hadn't heard anything about phasing out existing channels. When and why would they do that?

Phil,
It was on this forum some months ago, i think it was 5 years and you will have to buy a new unit. Some more current frequencies will be left out, I think now if you buy a new unit, you only get a 38 ch unit in the current frequencies I noticed Uniden hand helds are now available in "80 CH". regards Michael

The original date for 80Ch was Jan 1 2011, then it was put back to Jan 30 and now it has been delayed to some unspecified date.

In true government department style they stuffed it up, and the manufactures complained there was not enough time to get rid of old stock from the retail channels.

So now the poor bunnies that buy a UHF may buy one that is out of date before they even buy it.

Even if you don't think you need 80 channels ( 77) you may find you have problems in the future as current wideband UHF's do not receieve the new narrow band ones very loudly.

If you buy a UHF that is not 80 Ch capable then you either need to get a real bargain or you have been conned.

We've just put a new UHF radio in our Prado and it is 80 channel ready. When , if, the 80 channels come into being we will simply need a software upgrade. We didn't mind buying a new radio as our previous one was at least 15 years old and it would not fit in the Prado.

Cheers,
Di and Bruce

Hi all, apart from getting more channels to use, I think the main advantage will be the 8 extra repeater channels.
As time goes by more repeater sites will be installed around the country utilising the new repeater channels.
The older 40ch radios will not have access to these.
I have purchased a new 80ch radio for two reasons, I wanted a radio with all the controlls on the handpiece, the main unit is just velcro'ed under the seat on the carpet and I wanted to be able to access any new repeaters out in the bush, could be beneficial.

Just my thoughts...

Hi Maverick,
I have a a GME which from all reports cannot be upgraded to the new 80 channels.
So I rang GME and got onto their tech department and i was told there was no one there that could help me with advice at that moment and that the new update will occur sometime around July???. It would be better if I rang back then.

That is as much as I have been able to find out which is nothing really.
I am not sure if it is coming in in July, if I need to replace my unit eventually or whether it can be upgraded.

I am still in the dark.

Cheers, Bruce.
