As the camping &caravan industry continues to thrive, is the whole thing going to suffer due to the weekend idiots. Everyone seems to want to get away for that little weekend break at the first chance they get!,and rightly so, but it seems to me that this anti social behaviour in the big smoke is now starting to spill out in to camping areas in close proximity to major towns.its been going on for years, but like the trouble in the cities its definitley getting worse. Just this week in some cities the police are having a big crackdown on these morons with a huge amount of arrests( Good on them, but the court system will let it all down),But my concern is as the Law gets tougher will it force more of these idiots into recreational areas on weekends where they might think the chance of getting picked up by the law will be a lot less.

Cheers Axle.

Hi Axle,

It's difficult to imagine that people will give up the city nightclubs for country camp grounds. I've done a lot of camping and the number of times I've had any real problems can be counted on one hand. Get out there and don't worry about what might happen.

I must agree with you, it's a rare weekend we are at home. I do avoid places frequented by motorbike riders, as they tend to be large groups of young men without families with them.

Like you I must say trouble is very rare, so dont let fear stop you doing what you love.

I've been regularly bush camping for several decades and in all that time have never had a problem with hoons until just prior to Easter while camped with several others nearCoffs Harbour we were harrassed by several juiced up idiots who roared through our camp in a 4x4. They did this three times during the course of the night screaming abuse, blowing the horn and narrowly missing our vans etc as they careered thru the campsite.
I'm not easily scared but it was unsettling, what is it with these wankers ?
We reported it to the local police who were understanding but could do little.
Alcohol fuelled of course,

Would this have been at a location where a happy throng had met for a bit of camp oven cooking?
If so, I now have more info. on that incident.

sure is happening already. 4WD idiots fueled with alcohol no consideration for others or the environment. Loud music and morons with generators. Many camp ground have been abandoned by families and oldies. Unfortunately we have fast become the no consideration for others country. Generators should be banned along with alcohol at any camp site and portable toilets made mandatory.

I love my generator. It's a two stroke and rather noisy BUT I find that I usually have plenty of room around my camp site.

I cannot believe what I just read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Faulic_McVitte you must surly be trying to incite most responsible campers to revolution.

That is the most draconian suggestion I have heard, it's right up there with prohibition as unworkable & unnecessary.

I was trying to arrange a "family" weekend get together at a camping spot central to Canberra, Sydney and the south coast. I was warned not to go anywhere close to Nowra along the Shoalhaven River as it can be noisy and attracts the local alcohol fuelled hoons.

We all changed our mind and went to Cape York as a family run instead.

We also had a couple of the same race through a club outing in the Vic Alps just after Christmas.

Now Cape York - yep that's central to Canberra/Sydney

Hoons get up there as well I'd imagine, but half your luck anyway Phil. I'll get there one day.

Just a tad north of where we planned. An excellent drive. If you get the chance you should drive the Starckie Track as well.

We didn't have any hoon trouble up there.

Hi Axle

We had a huge weekend, organizing a joint 21st party (in the city) with emphasis on 4wds bikes, the bush lots of loud music and alcohol.

We considered a lot of things in organizing this, as there was massive potential for things to go wrong.

We decided that the best tool to keep things in line was peer pressure.
A venue that wasn't within site of a main road was used (avioding cruising cars of all types).

From one point of view you probably could have issued a hundred tickets for unroadworthy trucks/cars and various low grade offences.

Two or three times things could have headed in the wrong direction - but knowing who the groups were and getting a mate within that groups circle to smooth things along and not coming on with heavy authority saw
the whole event go exceedingly well and I was proud of the 150 young adults as a whole.

In relation to your post, I am not suggesting that campers create the problem, but rather that our society as a whole tends to exaggerate "them and us" attitudes by breeding violence(often legal) which invokes a reaction.

Every time I see a call for " No Tolerance", "Ban this", "Ban that", I think here we go again, another nail has been in the coffin of no consideration for others.
