Good morning everyone,

My wife and I just got back from a family camp out and stayed at the Solitary Island Marine Park Resort in Wooli northern NSW if one of you needs a recommendation for a nice caravan park up here, :-)

back to story I am considering buying a new lift off camping unit for my Hilux, after getting prices way past $10.000 I am now considering to build my own as I can play around and customise everything the way I need it and I have a workshop and the right tools to make one up.

The big question is, I am sure there are regulations in this beautiful country to stop people from doing so, has anyone done their own setups before and what do I need to consider?

happy Thursday everyone.

One of the business members on this site is advertising a slide on camper that is sub-$10 grand.

Slide on camper

Looks like a good unit fpor the price. Fiberglass and a dry weight of 180kgs.

Cheers Mick

As long as the camper complies with width and size regs then no there are no restrictions on you building your own.
If fitting gas aand/or carrying it then you must have a certification plate and a gas bottle enclosure that complies with the gas regs.
Similarly any 240v installation must be certified by an electrical contractor.

How's the new project coming along PJ? Must be just about liveable by now. Some photos would be good as I'm yet to see the rear slideout.

Yes it is getting there slowly. The slideout is finished as is the poptop, most of the electrics and all the plumbing is done. Interior fitout is getting there slowly, lots of fiddly stuff that takes days to do.

Hi Bueff,
I don't think there are any regulations against you doing it yourself as it is not a passenger vehicle, meaning you are not aloud to ride in it while traveling, just like a caravan, and there are plenty of people recently who have built their own caravans.

You may be subject to the Australian Design Rules (ADR) but you would need to go into that but I cannot see a problem. You are virtually building a box to put on the back of your tray top if I have gotten your thread correct.

Have a think about 50 mm cool room panel as it is already sandwich construction and is therefore strong enough to make pantech out of and is fully insulated as well. You know the stuff they make rigid annexes out of these days. The other benefit is that it is quick in the construction phase.

A mate of mine in Sydney builds Freezers (6"') and Cool rooms (3") out of that material and it is terrific to work with. If you want more info just jump in on one of my replies and jog my memory and I will give you my email address so that I can put you in touch with my mate in Sydney. He is a very helpful and knowledgeable bloke.
Just a thought

Cheers, Bruce.
