Black Widow have a product called Fred's Arm that allows you to do exactly what you are talking about. Check out their website. www.bwidow.com.au
I think that you could use all sorts of awnings with the arm.
I picked up a brochure at the Brisbane 4x4 show just recently.

Ironically I am having one fitted to my cruiser today, they are made by Black Widow and the arm that allows it to go from side to back is called a Freds Arm. They fit to the Black Widow alloy roof rack which is also getting fitted.
My wife is in Gisbon Victoria at the minute having it done.
