We are at Kalbarri heading north, sick of paying for caravan parks, is there any good places up Monkey Mia way to camp where we can have camp fire and toilets?

Hi Dazza; NO campfires, and the free ones don't have toilets either. They are lovely spots overlooking the ocean.

Yup - agree on that - we stopped at Whalebone - right beside the beach. Self contained of course.

It looks like the Shire of Shark Bay do not encourage campers. It looks like a good place to avoid.

I can't agree with that Ray - where else in Australia will you find a coastal Shire with a whole section on its website titled Free Camping areas?

Sorry Ray, but I don't agree either.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the area - except for the sandfly plague when we were at Monkey Mia.

Mind you we were self contained in our motorhome so had no need for public toilets or firewood.

hi dazza,

There is camping in Francois Peron N Pk near there but I am not sure what facilities are available. I think there is a fee for vehicle entry and they may only be 4WD accessible but you might want to check it out, depending on what vehicles you are travelling in.

Heather

Hi Dazza,

We stayed at Francois Peron National Park in 2004 - there was a vehicle entry fee into the national park, and from memory there were no toilets at the campsites, but there were bbq's. It was very sandy, so 4WD is required.

We loved the thermal 'hot-tub' at the homestead.

Stayed in the area in 09, though was very disappointed with Monkey Mia. Just be aware that the whole area can be quite windy and there is not much shelter - not many trees, just low scrub.

The free campsites that the Council provides are good spots though I think they are only for overnights, not extended stays. You do need to book in and there is a ranger who checks the sites. But the system is a bit confusing if you just come across the signs as you are driving in. The signs give a phone number ( I think) but the phone reception out there is patchy.

There is good camping out in Francois Peron NP but its definitely 4WD to get there as there is deep sand in places. Cant recall any fireplaces but there were clean long drops. Its a beautiful spot and well worth the drive out.

There is a self registration booth as you enter the park. I cant recall the details now but for whatever reason we had to use coins to pay the fee, but once the coins were in the envelope it wouldn't fit through the slot in the receiving security box. We just carried it with us until we found a ranger.

Cheers,

Val

I dont think you would get through the deep sand that we encountered, but give the ranger a call to get current track conditions.

Cheers,

Val.

A GREAT STAY ON THE WAY IN, ONCE OFF THE NW COAST H/W, IS HAMELIN STATION - NOT HAMELIN POOL CP. THE SIGN SAYS TENT CAMPING BUT THEY CATER FOR CARAVANS AS WELL. THE BEST FACILITIES WE FOUND IN THE WEST LAST YEAR AND $20 PER NIGHT

There are 3 free beach camps sites between Nanga Station (loverly spot) and Denham. As previously mentioned they don't have facilities. You phone for an overnight permit. We were there last year and discovered the council won't issue a permit on consecutive nights. After being disappointed with Monkey Mia, one day was enough and found we couldn't get another permit so we stayed at Nanga Station. They had clean facilities and backs onto a beautiful beach. From memory was $30 a night.

Dazza,

Seems to us so far in our travells through WA, that if you want a toilet you need to pay! Plenty of free camp sites, and wonderful views, but no amenities. We recently stayed at the Blue Dolphin CP in Denham, Nothing flash but OK, good position, $39 for two adults and child.......I think!

Cheers........David

Currently in Denham, very windy and cold at the moment and supposedly will be all week.
At least its cleared some of the fly's and mozzies LOL!

Went down to Fowlers camp a couple of days ago, beut spot but the fly's were real bad, lots of people in town and c/ps seem to fill up most days.

A good free camp is Gladstone on the other side of Shark bay accessed just North of the overlander r/h.

A tip on Gladstone which is a lovely spot BUT the road in is 6klms of really rough track and if it rains you can be well and truly stuck. Saw a b/t stuck in the mud and he had a he'll of a job getting it out - even tried unhitching and pulling it from the rear before sleeping the night and waiting for help!

Check the weather forecast before going in, having said that they do lock the gate if the track is inundated.

Hi Dazza

I came back to mention Hamelin Pool and see i have been beaten to it. The Old Telegraph Station was a very interesting surprise to us when we visited, and they have now added a caravan park. Nice to read a good recommendation on it - that is the type of place we would choose rather than in town or out at Monkey Mia. On a previous trip we had stayed at Nanga Station, but that has got some patchy reviews since then. Otherwise it was just roadside camping overnight along the way (one night when a severe storm went through).

Hi Dazza,

Not one has mentioned water yet but water is expensive there. $1 for 20 litres. Get it just on the way into town (RH side) at the big water tank on top of the hill.

So you might like to bring some extra from where you are. But that will use more fuel and you cannot get it at The Overlander either.
