Got a mate heading Hell West and Crooked from down South, he was here back in 2009 , he's towing a large Kedron with a V8 Troopy, he sure gets into some good country....Prior to this email he had come up the
Oodnadatta Track, to Mt Dare, Finke to
Alice Springs.
Here's what he had to say in an email I got today.
We are currently at
Barkly Homestead where we were able to
catch up on the washing, get some access to water after a
lengthy dry stretch, get some phone and internet access and
just stop and get a breather after over 4900 km since
leaving the
Tamworth area. What a delightful trip even
though it got a little rough in spots along the way. Saw
some wonderful countryside in the remote areas north of
Alice Springs as we tried following the Binns Track. They
sure got some rain all through the area and the grass is
belly high where it is normally rather barren. Prior to
Alice when we stopped at Mt Dare for the night we were
flabbergasted to have the publican tell us that there was
half a metre of water in the pub in Feb when they got 300 mm
of rain due to Cyclone Yassi! Unbelievable that out there
in almost the dead centre of Australia that much rain fell
as a result of a cyclone that crossed the coast near
Cairns!
It was much the same in all the region from there north to
Alice then north and east of Alice where the roads are just
starting to recover as a result of the unprecedented rain
earlier in the year. All that aside the country looks alive
with cattle so fat they have trouble walking.
We diverted to the Stuart Hiway just south of
Tennant Creek
because the Binns Track that should have taken us out near
Barkly Station was closed due to flooding then rather than
following the tar north we diverted this way and will head
north along the Barkly Hiway to the Barkly Stock Route then
follow it back across to Elliot then north then intend on
moving westward across to Top Spring and
Victoria River
Downs before coming the back way into
Katherine. Assuming
all goes
well we should be near
Darwin during the first
couple of weeks of June.
All is
well and we have had no breakdowns of any kind. A
bit of dust on everything but nothing major.
