Alan, are you using your mobile or Spot?

If it's a mobile that straight line is where there's no coverage.

And following on from prevuious comment, somtimes with Spot, it may not pick-up a satellite at for whatever reason and this might lead to a time change of up to 20 minutes since the last update,m in turn this can cause ' straight lines'.

Thanks for your thoughts

I used a mouse GPS on a laptop and it tracked fine. The straight lines were in addittion to the perfect track.

I'll just try again.
