I am doing some final prep work on my Prado for the trip in July but have been given some bad news by our trip leader that Eyre Creek my still be too high to cross when we get there in 3 weeks.

"If we are unable to cross which may be a reality we have to face, the only way to exit the Desert is the same way we came in via the Hay River."

"Kilometres is approx 1100 kms to get back to Batton Hill/Jervois Stn to refuel"

So my question to those that have done this trip in a 120 or 150 V6 Prado.

What is the average fuel consumption for this trip ?

The car has 150L and I plan to take 80L in Jerry cans, working on 5km / L (20L/100) ?

Any suggestions ?

Regards

Derek

Derek,

I had a look on Vic Widman's web site as he does tag along tours, logic tells me that he would need to be able to give some good conservative consumption figures to those who travel with him, as he would look a little silly if his customers ran out of fuel half way across.

This is what he has on his web site.

"Fuel
You will need to carry V6 petrols = 160 litres, Straight 6 and V8 = 200 litres, Diesel = 140 litres (this includes your fuel tank)"

Vic's site

Hope that this helps.

Vic's site does not specify the distance travelled between fuel stops. (?) so one cannot calculate the fuel usage

Thanks Tony,

They don't say how many km's for the recommended fuel.

I was looking at this page and now not sure. The Prado at the bottom of the page did well on fuel but the others very bad. I think I need more info from Prado drivers.

We are working on about 200 litres and are coming in via Mt Dare, French Line and then up to Batton Hill and out at Jervois. Did you consider going out through Mt Dare, although by the sound of it that might not be in the direction you want to go. On my last two Simpson crossings, (French Line and then WAA line etc) I got about 17.1 Litres / 100 kms. (4.2 TD Landcruiser)

G'day Jim, We're heading up the Hay River early August and if the Eyre Creek crossing is still closed, Mt Dare entry may be our path to follow. Can you please advise me of the K's that you travelled and did you include the Bush Tucker tour on your trip. Thanks for your help.

Derek,

Been away sorry for the late response, you are correct that Vic does not specify fuel stops.

The standard trip on the Simpson is Mt Dare to Birdsville and is around 520 kms using either route.

So 160 ltrs for the petrol V6 is worst case scenario for 520kms in Vic's case.
In your case that equates to 320 ltrs and the info from those who have done it will be a better source in this case.

Although if you go through Mt Dare you can fill up there..

Hi Derek

I believe you may be a little close and may need an extra 20lt or so.

Our petrol patrols are not as frugal as your car but our manual 4800 did that trip at 23lt/100 km and an automatic Pajero V6 with us used 24lt.

P.S. We usually carry a few 5lt plastic oil containers with us and burn after use.
We also onlt use the plastic jerries - which you can squeeze 23lt into usually.

Thanks for all the replies.

I will take an extra 20L to be safe. (250L in total)
