jammed uhf

HI all, went to use our portable uhf on the weekend and it appears to have malfunctioned. It is a Uniden UHO65sx. It is stuck on "busy". I have done a quick internet search and it would appear that this is a frequent problem with these units. I was wondering if anyone has experienced similar and sent their unit in for repair and a rough idea on how much it cost to fix. If it is going to be an expensive rigmarole I don't think I will bother. Cheers, doc.

You don't by any chance have the squelch set really low or turned on the "MON" (open squelch) feature?

I have a pair of Uniden UH720SX handhelds and they have a "MON" feature which opens the squelch and gives a "BUSY" signal, so not really sure about yours.

Cheers,

Tim.

Thanks for the suggestions Tim- no I checked all the settings. Internet search suggests it will be a 'broken ceramic coil' whatever that is. Beats me how it broke- been stored in the cupboard for months. Bit annoying as the unit has had very little use and been well looked after. I'm not having much luck with electronics at the moment. My Magellan GPS is also on the fritz.Cheers, doc.

.......it's a pain alright when they fail without good reason ... even more so when the new UHF regs have sent the value of every 40 channel radio plummeting - $ spent on repair is probably bad economics.

I had the same problem and rang Uniden.
My memory is now failing (haha) but I'm sure that I returned it to them and they fixed and returned it very promptly.
I'm sure that it was totally free (may have had to pay postage to them), but you can check that when you call them.
Gary.

Yep it is a very very very very very common problem. Stuck on "busy"

When you ring them they will pretent that you are the first person that has ever had the problem. Send it to them under warranty - they have a free return post - and then refuse to pay for it after it has been fixed. They will waive the bill.

Thanks Gary but it is no longer under warranty so I doubt they will fix it for free. A call to an authorised repairer today confirmed- it is a most common problem, quoted $45 to look at it and would not give me a price to fix it until they check it out. doc.

Direct contact with Uniden is probably the go - you do have statutory rights for a fair operational life of the product. The manufacturer's offered warranty is not the end of the matter.

Mine has done the exact same thing same model number all the research I did pointed to a dry solder joint.

I threw mine in the bin I got good service out of it.
