Hello,
Just doing a little forward planning. Can anyone tell me where I can get a book / map with
free camping areas on it. Next year we are taking 6 weeks off and would like to head from Mackay via Dubbo, Swan
hill /
Ballarat / Great Ocean Road, then follow the East Coat back
Home. Has anyone done this trip? Any tips / Advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Adam

G'day Adam
I guess the most obvious answer is a book called Camps 6, available from the
shop on this website. Regularly updated (I bought Camps5 a few weeks before version 6 came out), it is the favoured book by many travellers.
A lot of info on campsites, cost (if any), gps co-ordinates, and info on amenities at each
campsite listed. There is another book (similar) also available on here in the
shop, but the name escapes me at the moment. Have a look in the
shop.
Cheers, Dave

GB has given you a link to the book, note that it is spiral bound.
There is also a non-spiral bound version (Perfect Bound), but I certainly recommend the spiral bound version ... too big and bulky otherwise. Spiral bound is less than $5 dearer, but much, much easier to use.

Adam,
The two camps books already mentioned are very good value and can pay for themselves in a couple of nights. Just be aware that they are used by many travellers so the popular sites get a lot of use. So unless you get to some of the free camps fairly early you may find it hard to get a spot as they can become crowded.
Another option is to go to the
Places button in the blue bar across the top of this page. Under that you will find free camps listed with over 2000 entries.
In NSW both National Parks and State Forests have some good campsites and camping is OK in state forests, unlike some other states -
check out the different states websites for NPs and forests for more info.
Cheers,
Val

Err, that's 'Angus & Robertson'. However many of their stores are closed or are in the process of closing.
See here. Possibly the Mackay store is still open though.
Angus & Robertson are still available online
here.

All of these books are available
here on ExplorOz. There are 25 titles in the camping guides area.

To be honest I think you are better to spend a few dollars and stay in national parks or less commercial camping grounds than the free sites. remember if people don't have to pay for something they don't take care of them. The free sites tend to be full of rubbish, used
toilet paper etc. plus the daily rush each morning to leave in time to get a spot at the next free site up the road.
