time

How much time is required to do the Birdsville track?
I know this is bit like how long is a bit of string, just that I don't have much time and there's so much to see.

We like looking at old buildings, history, dunes etc

cheers

Hi Coley

As a bare minimum, 2 days, if you have the time 3 days. By the time you stop and have a look at things along the way, it does not take long for a day to go.

If you have extra time on your side, add a couple more days and stay over at the ferry site over the Cooper at the moment.

Cheers

Hi Hillel

If you take me as your guide, I will then let you know....LOL

Seriously, the best side is the northern side on your lest after coming off of the ferry. Depending on how many camped there last year, it would be a very good idea to bring wood in for a camp fire. The site is a very comfortable two hour drive north of Marree, do not rush, drop your tyre pressure and take in the various features along the way. There are also many other places on the northern side, it is just a matter of finding what you fancy and sitting back and enjoy the Cooper.

If you want to camp well away from the actual ferry site, but on the southern side and near the water, head past the detour sign just past Etadunna Station and head further north for the Brennan Memorial site (which you should regardless). On the right hand side of the track, head bush with good camping sites amongst the tree up to a kilometre off of the track.

Have a great time.

Cheers

Hiya Stephen
Would it be safe (allowed) to go past the detour sign up to the Memorial??
How far up from Etadunna is the Memorial?? Then I guess it's backtrack to the bypass road??
Cheers (will be there in 3 or 4 weeks)

Hi J&D

The road last year had the detour sign in the middle, with ample room to even get a caravan past, which there were caravans camped by the Brennan Memorial. It is around 25 kilometres from the ferry detour turn off, just past Etadunna to the Memorial.

Cars were coming and going all day and the road was in good condition. Here are a couple of images from last year.

The actual driving time of 10 hrs in the trek notes is quite accurate. Mike

I did it in 5 hours easy a few years ago when the track was in good condition just had to slow down for the creek crossings and avoid the big rocks in the crossings or you will end up being one of those motorists who complain how many tyres they did

Hi Coley62
I travelled the Birdsville Track in 2009 in a convoy of 2 cars, travelling with a mate experienced in the area as he had been along the track before and was "All over it" with things to see.
If you put aside 3 days travelling at an easy pace you will have a great time
stop off at the ferry and make sure you stop at Clayton Homestead camping area for a spa with a light refreshment
Good Luck.
