Hi
I am planning a trip to the
gawler ranges. I am looking for information as to whether the roads are suitable to pull a caravan through there. The van is not off roader. I would like to go to Mt Ive Station then through to the Eyre Highway if the roads are good enough
Regards Ron

Hi Ron
We were selective of which roads we took within the park, and they were good dirt roads. We avoided ones that specified 4wd only (except for the track into the Organ Pipes but that is another story!) The station roads around can be corrugated depending on last grade.

Was there last year.
There was a group of country folk there involved in a seminar and some had two wheel drive vehicles.
In good conditions the tracks in from
Iron Knob or
Kimba, (which do not go through the National Park) would be OK, but any amount of rain and you would have problems.
Personally, I would not take a standard van through as even which good track conditions, it would be "shaken up" some.
Mt Ives Station is a great destination though.

Agree, The roads are fairly good considering the country side but I wouldn't be taking a 'normal' van on them. Still rocky and corrugated.

Doesn't take too much rain to turn the road from
Iron Knob thru to Mt. Ive and beyond into a slush pit either.
Cheers

If you are thinking of turning off the bitumen at
Iron Knob to Mt Ive then through the
Gawler Ranges to either
Kimba, Widinna or
Minnipa then yes it is doable. But and the big but is tyres and tyre pressures. The tracks can be quite rocky and rough and subject to washaways. We have seen plenty of normal caravans out there but with the right tyres and driven carefully. We operate out there frequently towing an Ultimate XTrak which is never challenged by these roads but we travel at no more than 80 kph with tyre pressures around 26 psi in the 4WD and 22 psi in the XTrak
If the van is a long one then you need to take extra care particularly with longer drawer bars
Summary
Doable but
check with MT Ive on road conditions, use good quality tyres of at least AT standard with load ratings >116

And take it easy over the grids. Some are raised up, on a bend, and quite narrow.
