We have recently bought a new caravan with a Thetford
toilet. This has now been used and travelled yesterday and some of the contents spilled over on to the caravan floor. The cannister was not showing full and fortunately there was only fluid in it. We had ensured that the lever inside on the pan was in the closed position, the lid was down, the light was not showing that it was full and it had not been used much. There was also a small amount of leakage in the cannister holder in the caravan cupboard accessed from outside. What did we do wrong - any suggestions to avoid this happening again would be really appreciated?

Hi Kiwibound. Have had the same problem. The end result was that the flap valve into the cassette wasn't in fact closed and in the "latched" position. Closed yes, but turning the handle a little further, you can feel the cam on the closing mechanism "lock" into place. The spillage in the cassette compartment came the same way. Consider the "full" indicator on the cassette a bit like your oil pressure warning light, only comes on 5 seconds before disaster. Hope this helps.

Lucko is correct.
One must close the valve all the way until you feel that it is locked correctly.
I have been caught the same way.
He is also correct about the indicator.

Apologies we haven't responded sooner but we have been out of range of Internet connection staying at Fletcher Creek (with lots of other campers). Today as we have travelled we had no problems. We have taken on board your advice so hopefully that problem is behind us. Thank you all so much for taking the time to assist us.
