We travelled it west-east early June.
The track is beautiful at the moment because of the february rains. Masses of flowers, especially on the SA side and lots of bird life. Hopefully all still there for you in September.
South Australian side has probably the worst corrugations but there are many sidetracks around the worst bits.
Track from the roadhouse to
Neale Junction is mostly very good.
Track west of
Neale Junction had a lot of water and washouts and was as slow as anything on the South Australia side until the mining activity near Yamarna
Homestead is reached.
We met a works manager from
Laverton Shire on our way out from Yamarna. He was on his way to inspect the road so maybe it will get graded. We ran into some people who came through a week after us who said that they encountered a
Road Closed sign for the road going east from Yamarna - they were going west so came at from behind, so to speak. So, not sure what the story is with that.
Of the six parties we encountered in our week on the track, three were having problems. Two parties had a vehicle with shock absorber problems. The other party was a single vehicle on dual-fuel and his petrol system had stopped working; he was a mechanic but couldn't fix it. He was heading out for
Coober Pedy - 300 km with only 200km worth of gas. Sure there's some luck involved but I slept much better on the track knowing that my tyres and
suspension were in really good nick.
