We will be travelling in Western Qld for a month. I need to stay in or near
Longreach in August for a couple of days (for a medical
test). We really don't like big caravan parks, prefer
bush camping and don't need power.
All I can find in
Longreach are the two huge caravan parks and the
riverside camping at
Apex Park on the Thompson R, which seems to be overwhelmed with big vans at this time of year. Does anyone know anywhere else close to
Longreach for quiet, peaceful
bush camping?

Darr River about 30 km out of L'reach on
Winton Rd . No facilities but nice
waterhole and fairly quiet . Its on right hand side travelling towards
Winton

Jan,
We camped at Lilly
Lagoon about 5 km north of
Longreach. We were in
Longreach at
Easter along with about 2000 others it seemed but a local told us where Lilly
Lagoon was and we camped there with no one around at all, beautiful. You take the road to Starlights
lookout and you will see a
sign on the right about 2km along Lilly
Lagoon. Don't tell anyone. Cheers MickImage Could Not Be FoundImage Could Not Be Found

We are into our third night at
Longreach and are staying at a caravan
park ,only because the
apex park was packed and it rained yesterday and very greasy out there. The lady at the info centre told us definetly no
camping at Lillys
Lagoon.

Glenda and Max,
That is interesting that there is no
camping at Lilly
Lagoon. We were directed there by a local who said that is where the locals
camp. There is a
sign post pointing to where
the lagoon is but we saw no
sign saying no
camping (we may have missed it). I won't suggest
camping there in the future to anyone else.Cheers Mick

Hi Jan
I lost the reply i typed last night as EO is often too much for and freezes my computer. Early or late August?
We are like you and prefer to
bush camp rather than stay in towns, so when at
Longreach we camped out on the Thompson River - very nice except when it rains and you're camped on the black clay :O. Only part of the grounds has been gravel coated and we were of course way down the other end each night. We were lucky, being there at the beginning of September the weather had been hot for a week or so and all the weather chasers had gone.
I thought
Lily Lagoon was day area only so this would need checking.
We went on to
Ilfracombe to stay at the
well reputed caravan
park just to see it, and highly recommend it. It is subject to some traffic and town noise, but in a nice small town with lots to see - all free of entry charges. After a most enjoyable and information day in
Ilfracombe we then travelled only 20 kilometres towards
Isisford before
camping by a
creek line near a historic site so got our quiet bush fix.

Up there mid May this year & I don’t like caravan parks much either but sometimes it’s nice to leave your camper set up and leave it safe. I stayed at
Ilfracombe for 3 nights in May and would highly recommend it. As for Lilly
lagoon and Captain Stair light
lookout definitely worth the drive but no Lilly’s when we were there in May. Enjoy

About 25 km west of
Longreach,on Landsborugh H'way, there's a
parking bay on right hand side, at top of Leander Sandhill.
Toilets there, and plenty of
places to
park, in amongst the mulga trees. Being sandy soil, it wouldn't be too bad if it rained.
Plenty of noise from passing traffic, but you'll get that at any of the sites mentioned above.
