Hi there.
I am considering getting a Lokka fitted to my front diff (Ford Courier PE 2000) and don't have the workplace to do it myself.
My local mechanic (Port Macquarie) isn't comfortable to do it so I am wondering
Is there anyone in Sydney who can recommend a mechanic or diff guy to do the install for me at a fair rate.
Many thanks,
Michael

My local guy in Port hasn't done one before and was upfront and said he didn't feel comfortable doing it. Was told most guys send the diff to Coffs as the local diff guys aren't much chop and the Port 4wd stores charge an arm and leg.
Thanks,
I'll try dave.

Michael,
Have you tried TJM as I think they sell them. I had my diffs rebuilt to change the ratios and had it done at Coffs.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave,
How's things.
I couldn't remember where you had yours done at.
Will we see you at Levuka next year? I've still got the same shoes on the old girl that you followed me down the Malara Fire trail with. LOL.
Say G'day to Mum & Scott for us.
We'll have to catch up next year.

G'Day Jon,
Long time no see, Will catch up some where soon, You'll want some good rubber on so you don't have to get snatched by one of those Navara drivers LOL.

Michael,
I swapped my 3.9s with Brunswick diesel for 4.3s which gives a bit better gearing with 33"tyres, The speedo is now reading 7Ks higher so at 100k by GPS speedo reading 107k but heaps more go for hills & overtaking.

Cheers Dave.

Hi Michael,
I have a detroit lokka in my rear diff and a Lokka in the front (2003 IFS Hilux) I would very strongly recomend that you only have it fitted by a company that does them on a regular basis. I did a lot of reserch prior to getting mine and was swayed by Russ formally of Perth 4x4 as I origanly intended on purchasing a ARB air locker.
I have driven in several cars with them fitted and can assure you the quality of the instaler is paramount. Mine has proformed with out falter and can only be heard when on full lock. I have no issues with steering and would without question fit again. My brother had one installed in his triton and it sounded like a chain saw. He has since removed it prior to moving on to a 105 cruiser.

""I would very strongly recomend that you only have it fitted by a company that does them on a regular basis""

while I aggree with your comment it doesnt always mean having it done by the most popular company we know of who sell after market 4wd stuff. Two certain stores in different areas here in Sydney of the same name who I wouldnt let touch my 3 year old daughters dinky, stung twice no third chances for me. Maybe try Mannell, friend just had his done by them and is extremey happy with quality of work, some times only time tells how the job was done unfortunately, especially things like lockers where you really cant see alot......

Hi Kimbo,
My statement is "a company that does the task regularly (and well)" There are several 4WD companys in Perth that sell alot and there is no way I would let them near my car. I researched through the local forums and 4WD clubs and even spoke to the distributers before making my choice.

There are a heap of good 4WD places on the Newcastle area..

TJM in Wallsend or Out of Town 4WD in Barnsley as well as ARB in Newcastle.

I would give them a call as they tend to deal and look after a lot of mines and associated businesses in the Hunter..

An important part of fitting a Diff Lock is this.....

Backlash or slack between the driving and driven clutch teeth is an inherent part of the NoSPIN and necessary to permit
automatic operation when driving in forward and reverse. The total backlash in the driveline is increased by the amount of the
reduction between the ring gear and pinion. If the ring gear-pinion ratio is 5 to 1, the total backlash in the driveline with the
NoSPIN would be about 30°. This in turn is increased by clearances between planetary gear, sliding splines and the ring and
pinion gear. We feel that the total driveline slack can amount to as much as 1/4th turn of the driveline without being abnormal,
but if it exceeds 1/4 turn, other parts in the drivetrain could be checked.

Doug,

Totally agree with your words,

This is why I believe that the 4WD places in the Hunter would have more experience and provide Workhorse with the quality of workmanship that he is after, as well as saving a couple of hours driving to Sydney...

Well have done the rounds ringing around Newcastle and only one guy has ever fitted an auto locker before and he would have to advise his mechanics on how to do it. Oh, and of course almost every one wanted to talk me out of an auto locker.
Deciding if should get one as I still haven't found anyone who has done one before, let alone my model.

Give this company in Brisbane a call, they specialise in Diff's and fit Detroit Lockers, I had both mine done there, I'm sure they could point you in the right direction.

Hi Doug.
Thanks for the link. I spoke to Tony there who has fitted a few of these and whilst he will fit them he wont guarantee them as he had some many fail. An interesting comment by someone who fits them and is a diff specialist and contrary to most of the opinions of those who have them. Making me stop and think now.

G'day Michael,
You could try Coffs Harbour 4wd Centre - they specialise in Land Rovers, gearboxes and diffs. I have always found them very helpful.
