Hi coley62
In my experience live bait like shrimps mite be the most effective.
Lures work
well or as a last resort worms are always a winner
Good Luck
Cheers

Hi
Just got back from there, we had a lot of success with shrimps for bait. We had 2 shrimp nets and used gum leaves and a bit of cat food for bait, caught heaps!
For the whole trip we caught yellow belly, grunters, silver perch and a couple of things we didnt know, put them all back but kids had a great time anyway.
cheers
Andrew

We were up there about 6 weeks ago and had great fishing using red meat for bait.
Caught 6 legal size fish in a couple of hours in the middle of the day and returned some undersized fish to the water. (Mate and I with a rod each and sharing the task with the girls who also both caught a fish.)
We didn't have time to put the yabbie nets out as we were just "day tripping".
We were based at the
Cooper Creek Camping Ground on the
Birdsville Track (now underwater I'd guess) and cooked the fish for a yummy dinner that night.
The "secret" is in skinning the fillets prior to cooking. Nice firm, white flesh with no muddy taste at all.

Hello Sand Man - do you know why the Cooper and Diamantina fish taste so good and don'thave the muddy taste that is often attributed to that beautiful fish theyellow belly (I'm a Queenslander) - because they don't come out of dams - and the Cooper and Diamantina don't have mud. The water is all sand filtered.
It is very important to skin the fillets - also if you have time and space - lay the fillets in the fridge for a while and you will notice any fatty deposits will change colour enabling you to scape them away (when the fish are really fatty that is) - we just put them on a hot BBQ plate (never use butter or oil) and eat until you can't stop!
And I haven't got any left for breakfast either........LOL

I have had success with using the smallest stump jumper lure (or similar but other brands) with best luck with those with yellow and pink colorings. These also work
well in the Murray when trolled at average kayak paddling speeds!

Also the bonus with lures is that you are not carrying smelly bait.
