Eulo General Store No More :(

The Eulo General Store was destroyed by fire last night, this included the fuel bowsers out the front.

I have heard reports that a gas bottle ended up on the roof of the house across the road which caused minor fire damage to the house.

I hope the town recovers from this loss as I intended to get some supplies from there on our way to Silverton in 7 weeks time :(

Cheers Kev

Sir Kev,

The Eulo Store was great. It was one of those stores that you could find just about anything in!! Any trip that we took that way, had to include a visit to the Eulo Store. Hope they manage to rebuild and start up again.

That's a shame about the Eulo store burning down.

I remember going there on our way home from the gathering at St.George.
We couldn't go in the store because it was closed for the day, but there was still a heap of stuff outside the shop if we wanted to test drive any of it.

A look at my photo will tell you it's a pretty good community up there.
How many other places could you close up shop for the day and still leave your display out overnight on the footpath?

cheers

Haven't been there, but feel terribly saddened when I hear of people's losses like that. All the best to all of those involved.

That is a real tragedy and loss for the small community, hopefully no-one was injured, and I can only echo the sentiments of other posters.

We were there a couple of weeks back , and usually stop in Eulo when heading north, and find it a very friendly town.

If their regional council is anything like ours it will take forever to rebuild , when the only shop out our way burnt down in January 09 we had no fuel outlet for 6 months [next nearest 125klm away] and it took 15months to rebuild a shop due to council regulations.

I know for a fact that the Council had the site inspected by their Building, Plumbing, Environmental Health and Town Planner yesterday so I think they are being pro active in that respect ;)

It's good to hear the Local Council blokes are on the ball up that way Kev. Some Council officers can be a bit slack in some parts :) cheers

Kev , we had all the inspections done etc also within the first 48hrs ,still took the timeframe above ,for the 15mths we needed to go to the pub for milk and to the post office for bread ,everything else meant a 250klm round trip .

I am sure all those Council regulations were only enforced due to the current State requirements.
The Fuel bowsers at Eulo did not meet the current EPA requirements due to their age but they were permitted to continue to use them as they complied to the legislative requirements when they were first installed. To now replace them will require EPA approval, which is a State controlled approval, not Local Government.
The food prep area will need to meet the current Food Handling Requirements.

Quite possibly due to the fire being accidental the Paroo Shire will not require the land owner to lodge a Material Change of Use to replace the shop as it was NOT an intential discontinuation of its Use.

Building and Plumbing Approval only has 20 Business Days to be approved so not much of a hold up there. I generally get a Building Approval done within 5 business days.

I would think the Paroo Shire would consider doing what the Balonne Shire did when the Servo in Dirranbandi went up in smoke a few years ago and get a temporary fuel supply (20' container with inbuilt fuel dispenser) located in Eulo so that the Locals could still function.

Cheers Kev

what a terribly sad day for Eulo. The store was the centre piece of the town and the new owners Melissa and Pete had spent a lot of time and money carrying out improvements.

As expected they are both devastated at the loss of their new venture which they took on with a passion.

The sad loss of an historic building and SW QLD icon is difficult for all to come to terms with but Peter and Melissa intend to rebuild as soon as possible.
From the day they arrived Peter and Melissa just clicked with this town and fitted into our community just great. The entire community of Eulo is 100% behind Melissa and Pete and are keen to support them in every way possible.

Sadly, as it stands today there is no fuel or supplies available at Eulo. I will keep this thread updated as reconstruction evolves. And when the new store is open I know Peter and Melissa would certainly appreciate your business if you are passing through.

Peter and Melissa if you ever read this...... We know your loss is simply enormous but "CHIN UP MATES" and rest assured we'll support you where ever you need it.
