Can anybody recommend a portable radio that can be used in remote areas to pick up the footy in
Melbourne, We will be travelling to the Cape then down through western Qld while the finals are on. We had an old AWA transistor 30 years old and could often pick up southern radio stations but it has gone to God and the new ones don't cut the mustard.
Thanks in anticipation,
TTD

Previous posts on this subject have recommended Degen radios, can be bought online from overseas.
They work very
well, we have a Degen 1106 which has rechargeable batteries and mains charger/power supply, works
well and when we're not on the road is the shed radio.

Big ask, TTD.
These days try a Sangean, think Dick Smith still sells them, or there was a small chinese made multi-band radio available off internet, for about $90.00. There should be some archival stuff on this site, about chinese radios, about 3 years back.
Depending on your vehicle, you can improve remote area reception by fitting an AM/FM aerial from Mobile One, or Axis. They are 60" long, and look like a 27 meg unit, but really improve reception. Toyota radios(Fujitsu) have good sensitivity, as did the now defunct Eurovox, they were the best.
About finals time, the weather will be warming up too, so afternoon reception will be a bit ordinary. Why don't you
camp in a motel with Austar, and watch it there, cool aircon, mini-bar, what else do you need?
Good luck,
Bob.

We tried two different model Sangean radios ...... They were hopeless compared to our 35 year old Panasonic transistor. I will watch this thread with interest.

35 yr old Panasonic, eh Shaker?
If we're going to have a history lesson, then I'll have my Sony multi-band transistor radio, 4 x "D" batteries & a Traegar telescopic aerial, and listen to 8DN from
Darwin all day, at Police Hole, on Auvergne Station, or maybe the Top 40, circa 1968, from 2UW
Sydney all night while in the swag at Milligan's
Lagoon.
But in this era, one of the other posters idea of Radio Australia might be a good bet, depending on where he might be when they bounce the ball.
Think I've got a couple of Panasonics packed away somewhere, they were good gear, back in the day.
Bob.

Thanks to Robin, I got a Tecsun 660. Great AM reception, and SW, SSB and as a bonus has airband so you can listen to ATC. Lots of memorys too.
About $100 on ebay.
The other thing I bought was one of those loop antennas. Great purchase.
Tecsun Loop antenna
It works with my Sony as
well as the Tecsun or any AM radio. It makes a signal that is bearly above noise level, go to full signal - clear as a bell. Previously at one favorite
camp spot deep in a valey, I could just get ABC 774 Local radio, 828 local and on a good night 1024 news radio overnight. But at sunrise they would fade to noise. This antenna makes all of them relaible even in the day.
I put the radio in the middle of the antenna and tune the antenna and hey presto great reception. This alone might solve your problem. It doesn't even need batteries. Amaizing
