Maralinga

I've just joined ExplorOz and read a few comments from people about obtaining permits to visit Maralinga. Has anyone actually obtained a permit and visited the site ? I'd love to know, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmmm this reminds me 35 years ago they had a sale in Maralinga my old man bought 3 desks, 200 ft of 6 inch round metal pipe, a ten ton truck jack and some other items I can't remember.

Makes me wonder if any of this stuff was/is radio active.

Google earth can get you in pretty close for a look.

Cheers.

Thanks mate, yes I've checked it out on Google Earth. Must have been a busy place in its heyday. My son works for Dept defence, I asked him how to go about getting a permit, he said Google it. These here are changing times.

There a couple of years ago, however we then went north to Emu.
You needed 2 permits then, one from the defence mob and one from the maralinga mob. We only got into the place with the help of a friend who worked in defence. We found it a bit harder to get a permit from there to Emu. Lots of history in the old hospital with photos and records relating to the tests and cleanups. The best thing that I saw were the wells that were sunk by Tiekeins with his camp site still there with his woodheap and bed posts still there. Not sure of what is the go now that the "locals" have taken over and I have heard that you now are unable to get in. A great shame I think.

I went there several years ago on a survey job and was well worth the visit.
There is an airport which is large enough to land and park a couple of B747 Jumbos.
We visited several of the ground zeros where the British tested their nukes, but beware a couple of sites may still have minute traces of plutonium so is a good idea to wash shoes. I would not wear thongs or sandals at these sites.
The town itself still has remains of the golf course, swimming pool and cricket pitch.
If you have a walk around a dingo may accompany you.
It is a place well worth a visit for its historical status.

The Maralinga permit is free an is easily obtained as part of your trip across the Anne Beadell Hwy. Info about this is covered in our trek note for the Anne Beadell Highway and Anne Beadell Trek Note. And yes, we've been there. If you look up terms such as Woomera and Emu (the name of the actual test base) you will get more info.

HOpe this helps.
