Citronella oil works
well with possums, I wonder how it would go with the rats and mice/ Any experiences?

Yep. Soak them in it and light them. It'll keep the mozzies away too. ;)

Hi Justin,
I'll try and give you a constructive answer.
I had a problem with rats eating through the wires in the wiring harness of my vehicle recently. So I did a bit of research on how to keep them away.
There are a couple of natural ways:
(1) Use pure peppermint oil (not extract) - eg soak a rag in it and stuff it in area where rats are apparent.
(2) I have also used with success the fragrant
toilet blocks you hang on the edge of the
toilet bowl - these come with a little attached plastic wire and I tied this around under the dash of the vehicle - rats have not been back since.
These methods do not kill rats or mice but seem to work in keeping them away.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

Thanks Geepeem, I'm heading out west in September and are concerned with potential damage to my wiring given the rat plagues out there. I have heard some horror stories e.g. turbo's destructing because of holes eaten in oil lines and loss of coolant for same reasons.
Cheers

Howdy Justin -
Don't think it works on rats - Kevin Rudd rubbed some citronella on Ms Gillard and she's still running around annoying everybody and being a complete pest !!!
Happy Travelling

Is the rat issue at Coopers Crk likely to be over by mid October ?
If not, I'll take the toasting
fork ;-)

Innamincka Hotel tells me the rats seem to be moving on. Not too many comments about them at the pub from campers there recently either.

Rats ans mice are attractedto warmth. Wh en we were out that way Our Jack Russell told us we had a mouse in our engine so we got rid of it before it did any damage. (She was the best rat repellant anyone had!). After that we left the bonnet up so there was no engine warmth or secure dark place to attract them. This worked for us and the people who recommended it. Keep all food in plastic containers. Don't leave a dying campfire near your
camp overnight or you will attract hundreds to the warmth. Lynne

G'day
John and Lynn
I'd take my hound too (excellent mouser) but I'm staying at a few national parks as part of my trip. Where did you encounter the blighters? Good advice too about the campfire thing.
Cheers
