Hello all
We recently completed a very successful trip south to north on the CSR, and along with all the usual meeting's with lot's of fellow travellers, we did encounter a strange sight.
Just south of well 33 we met a guy from Holland on a pushbike c/with a single wheel "dolly" so to speak.
He had been on the track for 8 days at that stage heading south.
Am wondering if any recent travellers have encountered this guy ,and if so how is he travelling and, also if he made it successfully to his destination at Wiluna.
I believe he hoped to be in Perth on the 28th August to travel home.
At that stage we had doubt's as we met him on the 26th July.

Cheers & Regards
Paul

Aha! Don't know him personally but I've shared it into TriathlonOz.com in case someone there does!

Thanks, Michelle

Hi Paul,

Probably not the same cyclist but we saw on the Oodnadatta Track, between Oodnadatta and Marla back in June....however we didn't stop to talk to him so will never know.

Regards,

Heather

If you got his name maybe try googling him, just a long shot but a lot of the people from overseas and travel the outback do keep in touch via the net, blogs, facebook etc.

Hi Paul
They're a tough breed these CSR cyclists. I'd be keen to know his name and if he's blogging etc.

By the way,
Kate Leeming was the first woman to cycle the CSR 2004, see

and

Jakub Postrzygacz did the first solo crossing by bicycle 2005, see

cheers

Also My son Russell, did it in 2009 in his ten deserts ride.
Started in Alice. Then up the tanami, down the canning, Across to Laverton, then across the Anne beadell, thriugh the painted desert to oodnadatta, then down around lake, maree etc, up the strezleki to innaminka, across walkers crossing to Birdsville. then across the Simpson via the french line then to Alice again via old andado. He was self suported all the way, I was in support via sat phone up to 1000k away.

See his story and photos herehttp://adventuruss.com/blog1.php

Note. I said he was mad before he started but proved me wrong

Met a bloke by the name of Heinz Stucke in 08 on the Tannami , is the world record holder for bicycling round the world , left home at 18 and was in his 60's when we met him , give his name a Google , could be be him perhaps as he told us he would be back in Australia in a couple of years time to " do" some more deserts After he does the Trans Amazonica in Brazil.

This guy was a lot younger than that, but when asked 'Why did you choose the CSR to take a pushbike?'
The reply was a 'German mate told me it would be fun, and it's the only desert track in the world with water'.
We have some photo's somewhere of him and his bike so when we find one I hope to put it here. (If I can work out how)
cheers

Those are conventional MTB wheels on that bike! Whilst I don't doubt that anything can be done with enough determination, he'd mostly be pushing if he did it unsupported. Even with 4" tyres and a trailer wheel, I regularly had to split my bike and trailer, carry bike to the crest of the dune, and go back to collect the trailer. Whilst the same would also be possible with 2.2" wide tyres (as in above photo), 4" tyres are virtually essential for CSR terrain.

Here I am pushing up one long dune in the northern section with 4" tyres:

A photo of my rig on the Anne Beadell (@ Ilkurlka R/H). You can clearly see difference between the 4" and 2" tyres:

.... Some 4WD'ers I met at the southern end of the CSR in 2009 .... all real nice folk:

Just out of interest my name is Alan as well . I have a 19 yr old son called Russell too!!!

I doubt there would be many other fellows named Alan with son's named Russell.

Enough of the co- incidences.
