Question: Chambers Pillar

We are planning to take the Plenty Highway from Alice Springs to Boulia leaving on 1st Sept. 11. Can somebody give me a current update of road conditions. We have a 4 wheel drive towing an off-road caravan.

HI Cheryl Ann, I've moved your query out of the Chambers Pillar trek note where you placed to the Plenty Highway trek Note so that you get a better response related to the Plenty Hwy and perhaps this means you had not yet read this information? Please take the link you would have been emailed (or click the Related Article box in this thread).

For current Road Conditions, you will be able to refence a report by clicking the blue TREKS tab at the top of the site and picking the option "Check Road Conditions" - you then pick the Red Centre report, and this contains a list of all the tracks for which we have reports - the Plenty Highway is in this one. Here is the direct link for your convenience.

regards,
Michelle

Plenty Hwy good.
Some corrugations.
Average speed could be around 70kmh.

Donahue Hwy Average.
Some corrugations.
Average speed could be around 50kmh.

At the Tobermorey border it changes to the Donahue and it does change a lot.

Looks like it doesn't work. Look at the blog list and you will find in not far from the top.

Cheryl Ann,

We went across the Donohue/Plenty on 21-22nd this month, on way to Yulara, to see our daughter. Someone had posted here that the corrugations were pretty bad, but all up reckon there would no more than 50 kms of them, right across there.

On the Donohue, there are parts that have been cut up a little from rain in July, but we poked along here between 85 - 95. We were also surprised that there is around 70 km of bitumen along there, in sections, that no one seems to mention.

Once we hit the border, the Plenty road surface was somewhat better (no wheel tracks), but much of the surface is hard packed sand, and with the softer stuff blown to either side, it tends to be a bit harsh. We sat on speed limit once on the Plenty, but had to keep pulling up for Kodak moments when we neared the MacDonells. Oh, and we were still looking for all these corrugations........

Well, we did find some near Jervios, and from Harts Range west they were more common. Ice cream at Jervois isn't bad either, and they have a camp site there too. There's also 100 kms of Bitumen ,east of Stuart H'way, past Gemtree, that also seems to be a secret. Very welcome. Gemtree was a good spot to camp, with good amenities, and pleasant surroundings.

While we didn't pass too many other vehicles, did see a couple of 'vans heading east, so at a sensible pace it's very easy travelling. In your case, Cheryl Ann, would work on 2-3 days. Looks like a good camp at the Georgina River, but there are lots of places, that are overgrown this year.

Enjoy,

Bob.

Cheryl Ann,

Kevin has pointed to my blog of our recent trip in his post above. Overall I would say that the road is in good condition. Yes it's rocky, dusty and has corrugations but comparatively speaking, it's in good nick. It will be a lot worse when mustering is occurring which is usually earlier in the year (around May/early June) due to the amount of trucks etc heading through.

You will have no issues what so ever. I think my blog covers it including the fact that there is a single lane bitumen stretch in the last, western sections of the Plenty.

Safe travels

Mick
