inmarsat Sat Phone

Hi,

I have seen at this years 4WD show the inmarsat Satellite Phone and was wondering if anyone know much about them, or had any feedback on them?

They quoted me as a show special $649 for the phone and pre-paid calls of $79 for 100 units (1 unit = 1 minute to land line... 1.2 units per min to mobile), valid for 2 years. Is this a good deal or not?

It depends on whether you want it just to make regular phone calls, or if you are going remote and want to have sat phone for emergencies. Read the previous thread - you cannot call emergency 000, or most 13 or 1800 numbers at all. If using for an emergency, you will need to know the full number of the service you want to call, including international prefix. A tall ask if your car has rolled or you have a life threatening emergency and you have to find and scroll through a long pre prepared list or a phone directory to find the number to call for an ambulance in that area. That too may be difficult as ambulance services only advertise 00. Police Australia wide use 131444 which again won't work, so you'd need to have done research to find the local numbers to call too just in case needed.

Very valid point regarding 000, 13 and 1800 numbers seeing a lot of businesses and most customers service based companies are going to these numbers and don't advertise their normal numbers.

No good having a phone is you can't dial all numbers, I believe this is the same for Iridium if using overseas phone credits.

We use Iridium through Pivotel using a standard mobile phone number making it cheap for people to call us.

Immarsat are i believe trying to solve this issue with their phone service. Their deal is good value and has free sms, so long as your family don't need to ring you. Cheaper one way and much dearer the other.

We have our satellite phone on Iridium, at present with the service cancelled. We can take out $30 per month for a minimum of four months with TR Telecom and get a new number each time. Telstra wasn't flexible enough for intermittent needs. So for $120 we have a good service and that includes $10 calls each month - enough to call home occasionally and let the family know we're still alive. Purchase price was a lot dearer though.

Patrol Hi,
In my opinion that is a good deal.
Used mine extensively on a recent trip from Bris to Canning Stock Route plus a bit more. Logged on every day without any problems, as I used the Bluetooth facility never had drop out problems.
The charging is for the actual time used not in blocks of minutes. When my family wanted to contact me they sent an email & when I logged on at days end called them back The email is a great feature of the system .
You can buy an extra 100 units to keep on standby (life 20 years plus 2years expiry). In my opinion pre paid is the better option.
Like Holdens & Fords your are going to get different opinions .
Regards Mike.

We got one recently for our trip across the Simpson.

If you live in remote or not so remote area with poor internet and mobile phone coverage you may be eligible for the government rebate as well. Worth looking into

We made a couple of calls home from the middle of the Simpson other the the usual voice delay when talking it worked fine.

Cheers

We have just travelled the great central road, sandy blight track, Garry junction road and ,Garry highway, canning stock route from well 33 up across the Buchanan and buntine highways, the Barkley highway back to Sydney we had a family member in hospital while we were away and were making phone calls to home every 2nd day we had no problems, one of our party broke down on the canning and we rang Alice springs and receivedd advice and ordered parts no problems. If you look at there website they list the emergency numbers you will need to ring in each state which you can put in a separate folder emergency numbers which luckily we didn't have to use.We had a need to ring hawai while we were away I rang tc communications office and the staff could,t have been more helpful. They rang back to make sure we got through alright. So as you can see I would highly recommend the phone.

From that document

"As this is an international number, it will not allow you to place calls to 000, 112, 6 digit, 1300 or 1800 numbers. The phone is programmed to accept 911 calls in the USA due to legal requirements there. Note that this is not an Australian problem; emergency phone numbers do not work anywhere other than in the USA."

Not an Australian probelm and does not work ANYWHERE outside the US.

That doesn't exactly fill me with confidence that it will be fixed any time soon!
