Hi All
Like many reader here on the
forum, I get great enjoyment reading the
Blogs here on ExplorOz that are submitted by members.
Quite often a great Blog can have fantastic images, but when you go to open them, they are that small, it makes me wonder why they wasted their time to put such small images up, after all we are not paying for space or file size.
There are many photographic programs out there that offer the ability to downsize an image so they can be added quickly and still give a good effect when downsized to a reasonable size.
I usually downsize to around 230kb, but many people still use as low as 20 and 50kb. To make your Blog look great, do not do yourself an injustice, create larger photo file sizes and you will be glad that you took this advise.
Here are 3 example, the first at 230kb, the second at 46kb and the third at 19kb
You be the judge and the difference is like chalk and cheese, Just click on each image and see for yourself the difference in photo size, and I know what I prefer to look at.
Happy Blog writing and keep those great photos at a better size.
Cheers
Stephen

Stephen
I think anyone who can post a photo of any size is a genius.
I must learn how to do it, I have some good photos of the many
places we have been but I just can't get around to the photo thing,
Must see one of my sons and get them to write me some directions.LOL
Obviously I like the bigger truck.

You took the words out of my mouth Boo Boo !! LOL It's terrible being a bit of a Dinosaur and not being able to do what is more than likely a very simple & easy thing to do. Nothing like the Kids & Grandkids to help out with a bit of tuition though.
The only trouble with Grandkids when they show you how to do things on Iphones & Ipods & computers & such is that they expect you to be able to follow their Zillion KM per hour instruction & I'm left sitting in the dust scratching me bum & wondering what they were on about! LOL

Hi BooBoo and Barry
The only thing that will greatly help you and a must is a Digital Camera. If you are still using a film type camera, then you will need a scanner to be able to put the images up.
Once you have mastered the quite simple process, you will find that it looks a lot harder than it is. What I do is when I downsize an image to be used here, either on the
forum or in
blogs, it to know the exact location of where you have downsized the images to. For small numbers, I usually have my Desktop as the place to find the images.
Just below the spell
Check, you will see a Tab called "Insert Image" From here use the bottom button to locate where your have placed your image and then add a few words for what you want to say when the photo is displayed.
Once the imaged has been uploaded you will see some funny letters and numbers, nothing to worry about, it is just data for your uploaded image. From here you can either add more images, or use the Preview Tab to see what your finished image will look like.
Have a play and you will quite quickly pick up on just how easy it is.
All the best and do not give up any hope on getting your images up.
ps....BooBoo you have done a good job of inserting an image for your profile picture, correct resizing so you are already half there.
Cheers
Stephen

Hi Stephen,
Another worthwhile step when uploading images is to add a title put a few words of description in the box. In
blogs the title displays with the picture and the description is visible if you hover the cursor over the image.
As an example in the recent photo comp there were photos of wonderful
places, but without any info the photos lose some of their impact IMHO. Likewise a lot of
blogs include photos of
places that are not really explained in the text. Its not hard to put in a few words to accompany the photo and only takes a few seconds.
Cheers,
Val

Hi Stephen,
Agree with you, it's sometimes annoying to look at a really small picture.
It's a pity that you can't create a link in
blogs to an existing online image such as you can with
forum threads.
Potential bloggers with nice quality images could be put off by the joint inexclusive copyright mentioned in the terms off use of Exploroz.
I'm my recent image blog of my July trip, I have reduced the quality of all the images because of the inexclusive copyright terms.
If the link to exisiting web images was put in the
blogs section I would probably have another blog up by now as I have some really nice pictures which I am not willing to share copyright on; either that or I do a blog with reduced quality images.
Cheers
Alan

I have a number of photographs of the
Eucla Telegraph Station taken in 1901 and have been relluctant to release them for general publication. I have since thought (at 79 uears of age you think a bit slow) why should I not release them so that others may see how the original station was. Tell be how or who can put them on Exploroz for me.

Hi Brian,
I'm guessing you would be a member of RWAHS? Why not donate the pictures to them in exchange for a CD of the pictures. You would then be in a better position to upload them to this site...

Hi Alan
I was only in contact with a member recently and the question was brought up about copyrights with photos. Like the member said, you usually have one or more images of the location that you photographed, crop the image etc and them you have created a completely different image of what you may want to use yourself.

Hi Brian
If you could get some images up, that would be great and would be very personal for me. When we visited the
old ruins and the old jerry, it was not for a tourist look but for some reminisces for family history.
My mind immediately thought of what it would have been like when my Great Grandfather came through here in 1896 on camels as part of the small Hubbe Expedition. From here they travelled even further east before taking a sailing ship from Fowler Bay back to
Adelaide.

I doubt that the picture taken in 1896 is true. It would have been taken much later than that. The main street of the townsite was quite clear and there was no erosion at that time. The photos were taken by Manning who later gained some fame for solving the murders on the
rabbit proof fence, His son, Francis, gave them to me before he died.

Hi Brian
The images that I have just put up were taken by me in 2010. What I was trying to get across, what did the site look like
well over 100 years ago, back in 1896.

Ahhh that photo of the jetty is almost identical to the one I took about 9 months ago.
It brings back memories. We liked the area between
Streaky Bay and
Port lincoln so much, ( it was a one day trip on the way home from Bunbury) that we are going back there for a 4 week stay around March April next year.
OK, OK I'll sit down in the next few days and see if I can master the Photo thing.
And yes I have a digital camera, two infact one is a Nikon D3000 and the other is a little W725.
Although I still like my 30 plus yo cannon SLR.
Thanks for the prod Stephen. LOL

Steven,
Totally agree. We usually resize to 800x600 pixels, about the size of your largest image. File sizes vary of course but typically our 800x600 jpg images are about 100 kb. Don't know why your file size is double that, but that's computers!
I'd suggest to anyone posting here, or to
blogs, that they edit their pictures to chop out unwanted stuff, touch up the colour if necessary, and submit the image at about 800xX00 pixels. Editing isn't hard and can make a huge difference. We use a little freeware program, XNView, for this but there are many programs available for free.
And the results -

Image Could Not Be Found
Image Could Not Be Found
Image Could Not Be Found
All this fiddling took me less than 5 minutes and has taken a pretty poor original to some images I'd be happy to see printed. A little bit of editing is easy and makes a huge diffrence.
Cheers

I reckon most people look at the photos first, then read the text if the photos suggest there is something of interest in the article. Given its so easy to pop out the photos and click through them, why wouldn't you?
