Wire Luggage Baskets

Hi all,

Looking to fit a medium size wire basket similar to the Rhino type to two crossbars on our Prado.

Will only be using it on trips for a spare tyre and the hand winch cable.

Searched the threads on wire baskets and have read a few comments about wind noises and whistling when travelling.

Anybody have any other comments on the wind noise or comments in general on the wire basket type carriers?

I use a wire basket on Thule roof bars. I use three crossbars, and pack the rear crossbar with a 1 cm high strip of hard rubber.

I've never really noticed any wind noise at all, although I typically use a roof bag - a spare tyre may be different.

What you need to be REALLY carefully about (IMHO) is the robustness of your roof basket. The "U" bolts hold the basket to the roof bars through the wire of the basket, and this wire is not all that robust. I wouldn't like to rely on this type of arrangement if you were travelling any sort of distance over corrugations.

Thanks George. Will mount a steel plate over the wire to give better support. What is the reason for the rubber strip at the back?

Interesting question...

For whatever the reason, the 120 series Prado is designed to take only two crossbars attached to the roof rails.

If you fit a third crossbar to get a better distribution of the weight, you'll find that there is a gap of about a centimetre between the bottom of the rack, and the top of the rear crossbar.

So the third crossbar needs a little bit of packing.

Recently bought a Rhino one about 1.2-1.5m long and did a 4000km trip on bitumen with luggage in it, as we had 6 people in our Pajero

Can't really say I noticed that much noise over the radio or conversation in our diesel (apparently they are noisier than Prados)

For what we required, it did the job required, very pleased with it.
Was considering a proper rack basket, but they required different rack bars to what we already had and probably screwing into the roof and a lot more expense. We probably had it loaded with 50-60kg.

Thanks Mark. Had the spare tyre strapped to the cross rails on a recent 3 month trip to Broome and surrounds. Had a bit of noise from the wind blowing around the straps. Guess it didn't bother us that much.

Took my Navarra across the Simpson and places north last year. Basket on the front with spare and jerry cans. Only noise was when I had twisted the straps

I have used an "Outback" steel mesh basket attached to Rhino Racks for around 8 years or so and never experienced any noticable wind noise.
The leading edge has a wind deflector attached which may help.
Also, the basket is bolted to the racks with a purpose designed bolt/plate/spring loaded captive nut which is very strong and stable.

Got all my gear from Roof Rack World in Adelaide.

G'day Bill.

Did you make up the "bolt/plate/spring loaded captive nut" yourself, or did it come with the rack from Roof Rack World?

Hi George,

Not made up mate.
I think they may be a Rhino brand accessory pack of 4. The spring loaded "nut" fits into the slot on the Rhino rack, then you push down against the spring pressure and give it a quarter turn to seat it. Can be removed the same way.
The galvanised plates are placed on the mesh of the basket and the bolts screw into the captive nuts. Very secure.
I simply cut a 25mm section from the rubber strips on the rhino racks in the right location and remove these small sections when mounting the basket.
I don't usually leave the basket on between trips and find it easy enough to fasten in to the racks when required.
To top it all off, I also have a canvas bag to sit in the basket, then everything placed in it is protected from the elements.

I fitted a basket to roof racks on my 120 Prado and the drumming noise was unbearable at speeds of 60kph up. The faster I went the louder the noise. I fitted a piece of pine tongue and broove board, cut to length, and the noise stopped. I have since fitted a length of aluminium flat sheet that looks a lot better and does the job.

From the other threads if you load it up there is no noise. However if only half full it may be noisy. Everything is trial and error. Test it before you go on a long trip and if it is noisy fit something that will quieten it.

Image Could Not Be FoundHi,

I have $99 wire roof basket from one of the "cheap" auto stores fixed to Rhino racks on my x-trail. I recently upsized my tyres & the spare no longer fits in the wheel well so it is permantly in the roof basket.

The basket has been there for over 18mths & I recently did a 5800km trip out to Birsdville, Maree, Cameron Corner etc with the tyre & 3 x 10ltr jerry cans + tent in the basket & had no problems at all, including no noise?

It is fixed with plates to the Rhino racks & they were checked regulalry throughout the trip.

Photos shows the car on top of Big Red....

Hope this helps?

Cheers,

Thanks to all. Consensus seems to be no wind noise that cannot be fixed. Time to start wheeling and dealing with suppliers.
