G'day fellas,
I got a choice between two cars. Both petrol 4 speed autos in good condition
- 98 v8 petrol, 4 speed auto, low kms ( under 150000), excellent condition, spotties, UHF, duel batt, roo bar, $26000
Or
- 2001 4.5 petrol, 4 speed auto, 200000 kms, good condition, roo bar, side steps, $20000.
Basically what I want to know what the comparisons are between the two are in fuel consumption an reliability. One thing I have heard about the v8s is that the are thirsty but not by much over the the 4.5 auto. Just wondering if there is any truth to that ? I will not be towing caravans or boats with this. Basically around town an the odd long trip here an there.

The v8 has more torque lower, so they will be a better round town cruiser. They dont come with a solid diff up front, which is also good for handling on road around town or tripping, but not so good once you get into the bush. Beware the early v8's as the front
suspension wishbones did crack, the front diff did break alot....for 26k, you should be able to find a 5 speed auto later model v8, which had the diff sorted, the
suspension wishbone strengthened, and the 5 speed auto was alot better. If you look hard, you will find similar to a 2000 4.5 for 14k with 200,000kms....i just bought a 99 rv with difflocks and safety package for this amount at a caryard.
