Might be disappointed with speed.
4G is only around major city centers, every where else drops back to 3G and all the normal problems with access limiting when too many get on the network.

Could be OK if you don't download much

4G is not supported by any of the current crop of mobile phones.
It is only good in metropolitan areas for internet access via 4G supported modems for laptops, etc.

Not quite correct, there are a number of HTC phones that work on 4G.

Hi Friar,
You would be mad to buy anything but the 4G device. It will give the best coverage of any data device you can buy. It will give NextG coverage over most of Australia plus has the advantage of giving 4G speeds in some areas. Don't believe what other people are saying about metro coverage. Every regional city will have 4G coverage, there are over 1000 bases to be installed. You will even get 4G coverage in Alice Springs.

from Marty.

MartyB is dead right in my book,

Latest dreaded Telstra iteration of Next G
is amazing. Partner was getting 14.7 Mb download speeds on her
iPad and we were good 60 miles east of Canberra. I did not believe it at first,
seriously good stuff. It's happening out there.

Interesting. None of the iOS devices are 4G capable in any of the 4G formats including iPhone 4S that has just been released by Apple. It uses 3G HSPA. They can double the usual 3G speeds though so you can get near 4G speeds with 3G. So you will get ~ 14Mbps similar to the slower 4G methods not the 30Mbps from 4G LTE.

Steve63;

I was close but not close enough (and 'she' doesn't know how stupid I can be
some times). Her 'iPad' was actually her 'Mac-Air' (so I was dead wrong), and her Telstra
thingo was actually her 'Telstra NextG Modem' and the download speed was not
'14.7 Mb' it was actually '14.4 MBPS' And really, I should not have been mistaken
because 'she' is not using her 'iPad' in the car anymore because she is now using her
'iPad' to remotely control her 'Mac-Mini' using 'VNC'. I have no idea what 'VNC' is and
honestly, I don't want to go there.

Sorry, ...looks like I may be loosing it (just).

Thank you All for your replies, we have had mobile broadband for about 4 years with a couple of updated modems , this is like you say improving the system, we will probably not bother to take the laptop when we travel now ,instead use the phone to check the weather & get our emails , which we could not do with the old phone. ipads work when you swich on the phone

You NextXG plug in modem does not exist because it is your phone

Your keyboard and screen light up when you plug in your phone

And the last time you actually got a telephone call on your phone ? who cares ...
