I'm a new member and was seeking some advice in relation to camper trailers. I have been looking around and will be in the market for a trailer made from Australian components. We are heading off up the Oodnataa, Mt Dare and Kings Canyon.

G'Day Scott,

Where do you live? are you prepared to buy from anywhere in OZ? Or are you after local manufacturers ? Soft floor or Hard floor?

Cheers....Browny

There was a nice bloke on the ABC Sunday with Macka the other day and he owns the mob that makes CUB Campers, all aussie, all aussie steel.

Buy one before the poor beggar goes broke.

Bugger CUB campers, I was looking at them a few years ago, half way thru asking some question at the caravan and camping expo in Brisbane, the salesman asked if I was buying one now and I replied I was looking at a few today and would make my mind up then.
He just walked away, now every year since I pick him out and lead him up the path then go NO not interested and walk away.

I sold my soft floor camper a few months ago and second hand ones are hard to sell and you can get some top built ones second hand cheap manly due to the Chinese one being so cheap.

Try the forum "My Swag" There is enough information there to get you really confused, anything from $3,000 Chinese Imports to $70,000 Aussie made luxury.

Best of luck.

I was looking at some Chinese imports at the Perth Royal Show recently. For the price they were pretty hard to fault and could not be faulted in regard to suspension, frame materials, etc... just the finish. Do you want Aussie because you are patriotic or because you perceive them as superior? China is turning out some good gear these days.... not just rubbish.

Also do you want new/old; soft/hard floor, etc. I have a 1980's Albany camper that I wouldn't swap... its got no floor at all so I just lay shade cloth down for a floor. It cost me $2000 second hand ten years ago and I reckon I could still get close to that for it if I sold it now.... or do you want the mod cons... slide out kitchen, built in water tanks, etc?

Browny I live just outside Melbourne.
I am looking at a soft floor and new but a good second hand one would suit.
I recently attended "Leisurefest" at Sandown I was there to do some research. I found that the makers that were using chinese canvas and steel stood out as of poor quality, yeah I know you can't beat the price.

But I have seen too many cheap camper trailers broken down and heard too many stories about substandard canvas.

Any recomendations?

I hired it from DesertOak.

It was great, couldn't fault it. I would love to have the money to buy one. But it's out of my price range.

Looking at a Tambo or Customline I am hoping for some feed back or any other manufacturer recommended to me.

G'day Scott, I would be looking at used ones..a million of them out there & plenty of
bargains to be had. I put a Chinese Oztrail top on an Oz built trailer for next to no
money.. & have toured for 50k without incident. Canvas lifetime is a product of its
care, more than origin & the Oz trailer is probably made from Chinese steel anyway.
cheers.....oldbaz.

There's plenty of good quality Australian made second hand camper trailers out there. Take a look at the normal "sales" websites. You will see T-Vans, Ultimates and almost everything else in between.

You haven't really indicated exactly what you want to use it for though. There's a distinct difference between The Cape vs cruising the Kimberley. We own a couple of Ultimates and have several clients with TVans and reckon for consistent off-road use rather than off-bitumen both of these are, in our view, the pick of the bunch. But you can take a wander through any of the camper trailer magazines to get a decent idea and visiting shows can help

But I strongly recommend hiring one, doesn't matter what brand, and go somewhere simple for a weekend or so. Make a list of what you like and don't and use that for the basis of your search. You need to consider your living, cooking and sleeping areas exactly the same as a house

Regards

Rob

Rob,

We are heading up through the centre, Oodnadatta, Dalhousie, Mt Dare & Kings Canyon. We normally try and head up that way but we also camp along the Murray and live a stones throw from the Otways.

We have hired a TVan before when we went up to Birdsville and Innaminka. If I had the money I would buy one now.

We have just decided to have our own, so we can go camping with the family on a moments notice. Esprcially when juggling kids school and weekend sporting commitments.

So I am after reliable Camper that won't fall apart, that has the visibility to do most things without braking the bank.

Thanks
Scott

We opted for a Johnno's Light Off Road CT cos of the build quality. It was a 2 year old rental unit in as new condition and cost $8k. A dealer told me that despite the substantial rental fleet around the country not one has been returned for a warranty claim.

We've taken it on the Mereenie Loop, Painted Desert road, Coober Pedy to William Ck and the Ood Tk. It's solid and tows like it's not there.

We spent about another $4k adding batteries, charging circuit from the car, outlets, 240v to 12v charger, electric brakes and handbrake.

Sigmund,

We spoke to a Johnno's rep at Leisurefest @ sandown and we were impressed with the build quality and the honestly of the rep. We have them on our radar as a potential.

We dealt with Scott (snap) of the Pakenham franchise. Good service and advice. No BS. He goes camping with one himself with his family and knows them inside out.

A critical choice is whether you're going to tackle 4WD tracks with one; if so you'd be looking at the proper off-road job.

With a Forester that's not been a real option for me though I have done a few roads seasonally declared as 4WD with no drama. And the bare weight of the light off-road Premier is 500kg which for a solid unit is great.

Another good crowd (and website) to seek info from is

http://www.campertrailers.org/

and there's a guide there to buying 2nd hand IIRC.

Good luck with your hunt.
