Thetford toilet cassette requirements when in storage

Can anyone assist us with what product we should put in the cassette of our Thetford toilet for a period of storage of four months? Our caravan will be in storage for four to five months while we are in NZ.

Your help and advice would be really appreciated. We certainly don't want to be making an error and cause a problem when we return to Australia to continue our trip around beautiful Oz.

Many thanks. Gill

Fill it up with water and a capful of Woolies nappy soaker. Leave it for a couple of days then empty it out.

Spray some silicon spray on the rubber seals and then put it back in place, empty.

It will be fine.

Silicon spray is the worst thing you can use on the Thetford seals. Why people guess here whey they dont know is bizarre.

If you read the Thetford manual the only thing to be used is Thetfords
from the Thetford manual
Thoroughly clean the seals and valve blade, rub them in olive oil
and wipe them over with a cloth or a piece of toilet paper. Repeat
the above operation if the seal and blade are dirty or if opening
and closing the blade is getting more difficult.
Note! Never use Vaseline or any vegetable oil except olive oil.
These may cause leakage.

Why on earth would you NOT use silicon spray? Can you explain this please? Surely it is a much more modern substance than olive oil made for this exact purpose, won't go gluggy, and comes in a spray can so you can apply without making a mess!

paulnsw,

come down from the balcony at Vatican City, mate.

It's like buying a Panasonic product and reading in the manual: only use Panasonic AA batteries.

There isn't a rubber seal on the planet that would suffer from using silicon spray.

By the way, Thetford also recommend using their chemicals, but I bet that the overwhelming majority of cassette toilet owners use Woolies Home Brand nappy soaker.

Silicon Spray is ok for rubber, and Nappy Treatment is the way to go.

Paulnsw is probably getting confused with WD40 ect.

Quote !! Come down from the balcony at the Vatican?

I didn't know the Pope was into Thetford Toilets lol lol.

If the toilet will not be used for a long period, it is advisable to clean
the seals and coat them lightly with olive oil. This will ensure that they
remain in good condition (supple).

Here is a tip I have learn't.
When stowing your van and it has a cassette type toilet remove the cassette and empty accordingly rinse thoroughly THEN add at least 4 ltrs of reasonably warm water (warm enough so that your hands can easily withstand the heat) then invert cassette so that the water is now covering the main valve and the vent valve and leave to soak for around 15 minutes then do the usual and rinse the cassette out again wipe over and apply Olive oil to the seals etc.
The reason to do this is that a lot of yuck can get caught up in the valve mechanism and this hopefully frees it.
I also use the pressure pack type of olive oil that we use for cooking so we have a double use for the oil.
Oh and I am a Nappisan convert also

Cheers Dodg.

Hi Gill

Ours can sit for years between uses. Either completely empty, or add a 'dose' of nappy soaker dissolved in a litre of water (as per Gone Bush's post) as this is what we usually do after emptying when on the road. A good idea to put a light silicon spray on the seal. Ours proved hard to open once when left for a couple of years or so. Contrary to Paul's advice, our Thetford booklet recommends Silicon spray, so that it what we use.

we're relatively new to this chemical stuff - do you use the napisan in place of the Thetford green stuff that goes in the tank AND the rosy rinse stuff that washes it all down????? Does the napisan replace both pink and green???.....and what quantities??

If you've been using the Thetford products, first give the cassette several rinse-outs with water and a capful of the nappy cleaner. You need to remove all traces of the old chemicals to allow the new stuff to work.

Then it's add one capful in a couple of litres of water each time the cassette is emptied. That should work for 3 days. At this time, full or not, empty it out and start again. One capful each time.

You don't need anything added to the top tank.

As Gone Bush says Steve - and select a store brand such as Coles or Woolworths that contains 34% sodium percarbonate, not the brand name Napisan which contains less of the sodium percarbonate and has additional ingredients.

Another little tip when using the nappy san type product is to add about 10 drops of Eucalypus oil to the tank and every time you use the loo it smells nice and fresh.

Personal preference for smells Wandy, but i prefer no additives just for the smell of it in my caravan. There should be no odours to need to overpower when using sodium percarbonate and emptying after around three days.

Hi Steve - Do away with the chemicals now - if you can find a way to safely and legally dispose of them. The Coles/Woollies stuff is cheap enough for you to make the change now. You will be doing the disposal points and the environment a favour too. We still have the container of Formaldehyde based stuff passed on to us by the previous owner of our caravan - never used it and can't safely dispose of it. Even though the Bio Magic we started using was expensive, i still have some of that too - no sense in using it when i get even better results from the powders.

Thank you to everyone for your advice - we are using the home brand nappy product and are happy with them. We will now follow the advice re thorough rinsing and oiling the seals before the van goes into storage. We really appreciate your advice - thanks.
