I was under the impression that the main north road from
Lyndhurst to
Marree was now sealed but the maps I look at tell another story. Can someone please confirm whether it is in fact sealed or not.
Thanks
WBS

No the road is not sealed. You may come acroos some sections that are sealed but not many. It is the beginning of the
oodnadatta track.
Cheers Steve

We drove from
Lyndhurst to
Marree in June and the road was not sealed but was
well graded. Locals told us it is usually kept in good condition. No problems towing a van.
If you are going that way we recommend you don't bother staying in
Lyndhurst. The very small caravan
park at the pub is very cramped and the pub management were all grumpy and grudged any service. The roadhouse gave cheerful service, same priced fuel and the food looked OK. The campfround just up the road at
Farina is excellent -
Water and flushing
toilets and hot showers if you light up the donkey! It is
well maintained by the station owner. It is spacious and very attractive. An honesty box asks for a $5 donation. The historic township of
Farina is being restored by volunteers and is
well worth a walk around.
Many people leave their
camp at
Farina and drive up to
Marree for a Lake Eyre flight rather than stay in the
Marree Caravan
Park where the amenities are truly substandard compared to any other outback
park! If you are self sufficient you can
camp for free at the
Marree pub. Lynne

Lynne
Thanks for taking the trouble to reply. You've read my mind regarding my plans, the caravan,
Marree and Lake Eyre.

Hi WBS, got back from the Flinders mid October. Rd from Maree to
Lyndhurst was good condition gravel with the odd pot hole. We were taking our van to
Arkaroola, so left the van at
Copley CP (great place, Shirley very helpful, good pub feed) and did day trip to
Marree and up the
Birdsville Track to see the
Coopers Creek and ferry.
Well worth the long day trip.
Reports from many travellers we spoke to - there were mostly bad comments about the
Marree CP.
On the return trip to
Copley, we travelled on the gravel road just after a storm. These roads become very greasy quickly. Sensible driving but did not need 4wd.
As mentioned,
Farina and the CP are worth the stopover.
Cheers,
Ian

We towed a Jayco soft roader from
Coober Pedy to
Lyndhurst and beyond without any probs. Road wasn't very corrugated at all but pretty stony. In fact, the constant bombardment of loose stones on the break cables caused them to shred their plastic coating and fail. Jayco don't put any meaningful protection around the electric break cables (we have done so now) but otherwise ok. Probably averaged 80/90 kph and was surprised how decent the track was. We were advised to start at
Coober Pedy as the top part from Maree was the worst - so we did. Very enjoyable and plenty of
places to stay. We liked
Coward Springs.

I was last on that section of road over the
Easter period earlier this year.
There was a few sections of bitumen between Lyndhust and
Marree which I judged to be "passing sections", although not signposted as such, but the majority of the "road" is unsealed.
A couple of stretches had broken bitumen where
water had lifted the black top.
Perhaps this was an experiment by the highways department. I don't see any real advantage of a bitumen surface in this area if
water is going to damage it during local flooding.

The road form
Lyndhurst to
Marree is mostly unsealed, there is a 17 km section that is sealed from
Farina onwards. From that point there is no other bitumen until
Marla. The
Oodnadatta track varies in surface quality but I would not say it is only suitable for 4WD. The main problem is rocks being thrown back onto any trailer or caravan that you are towing. Rear window protection is an absolute must.
