Hi all, I've got a set of Rock Tamers on my 4.2TDi GU Patrol. I've noticed the rubber flap on the passenger side gets pretty hot from the exhaust even though it hangs about 220mm from the exhaust. Has anybody overcome the problem by drilling/punching numerous holes in the rubber flap? I'm thinking holes of about 7-10mm in diameter wouldn't allow any rocks through but might improve the escape of the hot exhaust..... Comments/ideas would be welcomed. Thanks and safe travelling

Ian,
On a long trip that the engine was working particularly hard (
Toowoomba Range) then strong head wind, burnt through
mine.Had to redesign to get the flaps under the exhaust.

I saw in a good ideas site somewhere where someone replaced the rubber with those woven wire door mats (the ones that you scrape mud of your shoes on) that you buy at a hardware
shop. Solved a number of problems including exhaust gas and wind resistance.

Ian
I have RT. but do not use theem anymore
Like you I noticedd how hot they became. Also noticed just by touch that the rear tyres were running hot.
Did some research (including this
forum) and found others noticed it as
well, confirmed by people who have tyre pressure monitors. Much hotter that without RT
Also found people saying that they are concerned abount the diff running hotter as
well.
The RT did not do the job for us in fact we found gravel and rocks higher on the van and on it's roof.

I use Rock Tamers when towing my camper and have not noticed any adverse heat buildup.
The exhaust outlet on my diesel powered vehicle is angled towards the road and the exhaust gas is not directed back into the rubber flap as far as I can tell.
Try a 45 degree angled end piece on your exhaust pipe.
That should fix your problem.

Extend past or angle the exhaust down away from the mud flaps.

I have RT on my 80 Diesel the exhaust is directed downward I dont have a problem other then then getting a little sooty.
I dont think they are the complete answer to the stones either, still had to paint the front of my trailer after an outback trip
Having broken one rear window previously, I now cover the glass with cardboard just to be safe
Cheers

I have used
Rock Tamers on a Pajero and the instructions stated at least 250 mm from exhaust, however they started to get very hot. I stopped on the road and fitted an empty baked bean tin with the side cut out to the exhaust, this directed the exhaust sideways with no further problems.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I think I'll try a combination of adding a small extension to the exhaust so it exits to the side and also might go with trying to shift the RT even further away from the exhaust,
Thanks again for the good replies. Cheers
