CSR Communities and Rangers Meetings

Hi People

Normally these days I stay out of the forum, but some things people need to know.

There have been a series of meetings of communities, rangers and Elders along the CSR. I live at Mulan community as most EO Members know. My nephew is the Head Ranger here at Mulan, with the Paruku IPA (Indigenous Protected Area), he has informed me of this, and will update me as he knows. I cannot give further details until I know.

The general consensus is a need for a single permit to cover the entire Canning Stock Route, preventing the necessity to go through a variety of agencies to get through different areras. The Stations are also involved in these discussions, and have given positive thoughts on this matter.

Of course, once my nephew advises me of when and through whom these permits can be obtained, I will advise the EO Administration.

Please be advised that the CSR is closed now. There was a massive hailstorm (yes hailstorm) that did a lot of damage at BHP mine, and went right through to Jameson. The CSR near the top end (Billiluna end) has also has considerable water lately.

Many thanks to EO Member Ric and his wife, who came to Mulan this year, and met with the Elders, letting the Elders know about the wonderful floral displays on the CSR through the year. I do hope they do a blog with their photo's.

One final observation, the Tanami Track, between the Caranya Gates and the Wolf Creek Crater turnoff has been badly rutted in some spots and requires extreme caution.

I hope you all have safe travels and a great week.

Marc

Hi Marc :)

I thought that Four Wheel Drive Australia, who provide the permits, were expanding the permit to cover all including controlled access to Aboriginal sites. Did this not get off the ground? Old permit was $50 and they were charging $100 for the new comprehensive one. Haven't people been paying the $100 for their permit?

Thanks for keeping us in the loop and i look forward to your further updates.

Hi Mh

I will ask my nephew about that for you. I do know that whomever was getting paid, the Rangers and others who maintain various aspects of the CSR were not receiving funding or recompense for their duties, but I do not know, yet, if that is connected with these meetngs and the like.

I will not make too much further comment, as that may open a "can of worms" that I seriously donot want opened.

You have a great week Mh.

Motherhen,
The FWDC permit covers the CSR from Well 5 to Well 40.
Currently the IPA as a sign of good faith are waiving their permit fees to FWDC permit holders.
Mike.

Could you enlighten us as to what maintenance is being conducted by the rangers on the CSR?

Hi John

At the top end of the CSR, the Rangers do Well maintenance when they can (taking rubbish out and away from wells. I am talking about leaf and natural matter before anyone jumps onto the "liiter" bandwagon.

A few years ago some of the trackers from Mulan were taken out by the Rangers to find a lady who had walked away from a tour group. This person suffered a condition of some sort causing her to walk away. Fixed wing and choppers did not find her, but the trackers had her in a few hours.

The Rangers look after the track and the people travelling it. I monitor HF and UHF, never entering people's chats, but prepared at any time to let appropriate people (such as Rangers) know if someone is in need of assistance.

My answer may not satisfy you, but it is all I can say for now.

Have a great week.

As with yourself, I am a lifetime member, though as you may understand, staying in the background is frequently wiser.

Hi Marc,

Thanks for your update and information - I've missed your posts and information on the forum!

We travelled the CSR early this year up to Durba Springs where my poor Mazda BT50 suffered a broken chassis. Thanks to the generous help and support of fellow travellers we were able to construct a temporary repair and escape to Newman (via Jigalong).

This was the third time we have been on the CSR and there seems to be more & more travellers each time. It is a spectacular part of our country, and would love to see more of it especially away from the crowds.

Thanks again Marc, keep well and hopefully I can make in up your way sometime soon.

Cheers, Geoff

Hi Muntoo

Nothing "happened" to me. Between work commitments and new grandkids a man does not have all that much time.
I have been frequently in touch with quite a few members by Member Message, and a few with whom I have swapped email addresses.

Have a great week.

Hi Marc,

Good to see you on here again. I have been lurking for a number of years now and have often read some of your posts with interest.

I am in the infant stages of planning a trip from Sydney to Halls Creek, down the canning to Wiluna and then home to Sydney for Winter 2013. I have done a similar trip last year although instead of the Canning we travelled West to East accross the Great Sandy and Gibson from eighty mile beach to Uluru, so the Canning will add another level to that.

I eagerly await any further updates you have for the Canning as you come across them and given at this stage my planned route to get to Halls Creek will be via the Tanami, i would love the oportunity to visit your self and your community on the way through.

Tony.
