We are considering venturing through Broken Hill to the Flinders Ranges in January.

Anyone got any feed back on how hot its likely to be. Just looking at average temps on weatherzone probably don't give an accurate pictue

thanks.

I was there in january a few years back and had a good time. Temps in the 40's are not unusual. That makes hiking in Wilpena a bit of a struggle. Mostly I enjoyed the great scenery from inside the air conditioned car. We camped in tents and didn't have a problem. Cheers Mike

Will be hot, crowds will be down and if you camp somewhere with a pool it's a great way to cool down after a day of walking.

Hi Peter

When ever we go it is always during the cooler months and a top location. I knew one old chap from Clare that would go up there in January for many years. When I asked him why did he go up there when it was so hot, his reply was that he had the whole area to himself and as hot as it was during the day, it would always cool down at night.

Cheers

Was in the northern Flinders between xmas and the new year a few years ago with overnight temp in high 30's . One sleepless night it was 39.9 C at 2 am in the morming & didn't cool off much below that!) so it can be quite warm.

Great choice we went to the Gammon Ranges Arkaroola one Jan. We drove out from Sydney. We were wondering if we were mad or not but desperately needed to escape from the city for a bit. It was sure hot on the way out and we arrived for the first night in Cobar to over 40c+ and checked into an air conditioned motel. Then we went to White Cliffs and stayed underground (magical).Broken Hill was a beautiful outback place and the artwork is stunning.
We spent New Years eve there and had a great time at a club with friendly people. Then off to Arkroola via Lake Frome (dry) and up into the Gammons. At 1000 Meters high we had the best time camping around pristine rook pools and creeks, swimming and relaxing amongst prolific wildlife and had it all to ourselves! The daily temp was about 32 -35 C. (a lovely dry heat) We did the ridge top tour (a must) and had one of the best holidays of our life. Enjoy.

the heat has been covered fairly well during the day by the other so yer, expect hot days. need to take into account very warm nights also; sometimes too hot to sleep if outside.
Fly's can also be bad that time of year but are impossible to pick. sometimes I've been up there and they are great, other times you feel like screaming in frustration.
always pack a fly net so at least you can eat/drink under it without the extra protein.

Not trying to put you off though! If you know what to expect then it's not a surprise :)

Cheers,
