I have been looking at the Hema's Great Desert Tracks, South East sheet and followed some tracks labelled as UR4, UR5 and UR8 from Silverton to Cameron's Corner.

Has anyone got any info on them? I am just looking for a different way from Broken Hill up to Birdsville etc.

When we were at Cameron's we recently saw two cars (4x4 tourer setups) come over the hill into the Corner. They were following the NSW side of the dog fence. I thought that would be a maintenance only track. Or is it another way from Hawker Gate to the Corner after following UR4 and UR5 to the gate.

Also what does UR stand for? User Road. Hmmmm

Phil.

A group of us travel Nth/Sth along that route to get to the national get together.
The signs and the locals make it clear, that travelling on the maintenance track is not welcome.
There is a section of road that travels next to the fence that gives you a good Idea of what the rest of the track is like.

If you contact "Pinview station" www.pineviewstation.co.au "Jen & Mark.
You can camp there and access some remote section of the track on their station.

Lots of water and wild life when we went through.

safe travels.

Thanks Wim.

Any idea what the going is like and any timings would be appreciated.

I am looking at this route for the return part of a Canberra - Oodnadatta - Simpson - Cameron's and home loop.

I had a feeling that the track next to the dog fence would be out of bounds. We were directed onto a short section as part of a detour on the way to Toona Gate. Something did not feel right. Anyone with an ounce of brain could see that the maintenance track was well maintained and normally not for general 4x4 touring use. Not keen on going where we shouldn't. It puts at risk our future use. I have seen too many tracks closed to the public in the local Brindabellas because of hoons and misuse.

PS That "air bag" in the photo is a bit stiff for my back. I think I will stick to springs.

Phil.

The going is easy and three days of driving if you are taking your time to take in the sights.

Yes, the CSR upgrade. Check the blog for more info. Still cannot believe it worked.

G'day Phil,
We towed our caravans over that way. from Silverton- Mulga Valley,Avenel, (along dog fence) to Hawker Gate and then turned right to Winathee station, Hewart Downs and Fort Grey. The road along the dog fence to Hawker is not the fence service road. It changes at Hawkers Gate and you must turn east. It has large warning signs not to travel on the dog fence.
It was a good run with the vans, not extra hard but you might (wil) need a GPS. Check the track on Google Earth. You drive through a few stations and they ask you to report in, which we did. Everyone was very friendly. A lot of the larger road sections have road trains on them but NOT Mulga Valley.

Enjoy the trip,

Cheers,
Bill

Hi Bill

We won't be towing anything so I would say it would be an easy drive. I figure that the fence track north of Hawkers is out from both yours and Wim's comments.

Question: Did you call ahead to the stations or were there signs to pop in? I suspect the latter.

Phil

PS: FA18's all over the place here! But they are above the clouds and we cannot see them. What a life. The air must look like a large O's and X's game.

Phil,
North of Hawkers Gate is illegal.
We didn't call ahead, there are signs on the gates. (it's probably an insurance requirement for them) When i saw them mustering the sheep into the pens, I just pulled up and said G'day. Another owner heard us on the uhf and we met up and had a yarn at a dam she was checking. The next station the owner was pulling some terrific yabbies from a dam and gave us a bucketfull.

enjoy the trip,

Bill

Excellent. I may drop in and say Hi anyway. A bit of yabbie goes a long way with us.
Thanks

A few pictures from Cameron Corner heading south to Silverton travelling as close as possible to the fence line] ...

At Theldarpa Station it was only $10 per vehicle. We had a great shearing shed to explore, a donkey for hot showers and a free supply of wood.

Heading south we paralled the Dog Fence and the maintenance track for a long time.

A good season means lots of wildlife especially emus along stretch of road.

Thanks to these graders the road was in excellent condition.

Pine View Station charged $15 per person per night. Needless to say, we stayed one night. Firewood was supplied for the donkey and campfire.

This was a very scenic trip and at our time of travel, the roads were great.

Superb information. Just what the doctor ordered. I will also visit your Blogs. I did not realise that the stations were approachable for overnight stays.

We have one problem with stopping. I have hospital treatments exactly every four weeks. That leaves a few days under the four weeks for any trip. I have been talking to them and hoping that by next Jun-Jul they will be able to open one up to five or even six weeks. It all depends on how the blood holds up.

We also drove through Sturt NP. But it had been raining and the top layer of dust turned to a typical red sticky goo. The photo below was taken at a cuppa stop at Fort Grey Basin on Middle Road.
