has anyone stayed at shady camp with a caravan and how was it ? thinking of calling in there for a few days prior to the daly this year. Any other good sites close to a river ie. alligator, mary where you can park the van and launch a tinnie?

Sorry Joe, I meant this season March -April, as I stay on the daly april and part may each year for 6 weeks. Have fished the Mary at the barage/causway and did well but never stayed at the camp, was just wondering what it was like?

I have spoken on here before about Shady Camp. Its big and flat and had a few enviro toilets when I was there 2 years ago.
The mozzies could carry you away, no differant to the rest of Kakadu in that respect.
The crocs there have to be seen to be believed. When you have a high tide at night, hundreds of crocs (not an over statement) gather at the causeway. A VERY big eye opener.
I did cast a few lures, albeit very carefully. No luck for me unfortunatley but well worth the try. You also have fresh water on the upstream side of the causeway and salt water on the other. At low tide, the salt water is about 1km away from the causeway tho due to the big tides.

G'day Scotty
What I have started doing, if I want to know what a place looks like is to Google it & hit "images"( top left of search screen).
It brings up a fair few hits for Shady Camp. 2.2 million or so.
Google earth might work too if they have sent the cameras out there..

I had a look on google at the images.
There seems to be a couple of photos there of the camp ground.
Scary thing is how many photos there are of people swimming & standing in the water fishing on the barrage.

i stayed there about 2 months ago, can't say we had any mozzie problems. the campground is just to the right of the causeway and is very flat, sort of grassey and open with not alot of shade about. there's a boat ramp just to the right of the causeway for boat launching, but at low tide the water disappears from the righthand side of the causeway completely. my mate who was there with me mentioned a boatramp to the left aswell for the lagoon, but i don't remember seeing it there. not sure how you'd go without a trailer for boat launching there though, we didn't see very well what the boatramp was like with water there as the tide didn't come back in until dark, and whilst we were on the causeway at night we were more concerned with all the crocs about (bloody amazing to see though). the campground has a fence of sorts between you and the river, i guess to help keep the crocs out, there's also a line of trees between the fence and the water also.

Thats how i remember it, it looks like i would have to take the tinnie out the water every night and i dont want to take a trailer.

thanks Scotty

ignore my ugly mug and have a look behind me, that patch of red dirt on the right of the pic in the background is the boat ramp and behind that line of trees along the waters edge is the campground (that baby went back in the lagoon for you to catch when it grows up more...lol)

this is a pic from the day time with the water in (forgot about that the next day), you can see the end of the boatramp behind the rocks on the right. the campground is off to the right behind the trees, i think a dirt track runs between the trees and the fence from memory also.

Beautifull place and very warm even in july.
Just watch the 7 metre tides on the salt water side.
