Darling River Run

Has anyone been on the darling river run recently...what are the road conditions like & is it open....recommendations? Hoping to travel that way in a couple of weeks time as far as Willcania or possibly Menindee Lakes.

Hi. I tried to go Ivanhoe/Menindee a few weeks ago. I was towing a 22ft van and found it way too rough after about 10k so turned around and went Ivanhoe/Willcania. It was much better but still a bit rugged in places. A week later I went Broken Hill to Menindee and whilst there went down the Menindee/ Pooncarie road a bit to try it out. Still way too rough for the van so went back to Broken Hill. It may be a lot better if you are not towing or towing something a lot lighter than me. (My van weighs 2.5 tonnes) I spoke to a member that does Menindee (Copi Hollow) to Ivanhoe in two and a quarter hours in a v8 cruiser ute but i'm buggered if I know how he does it. Cheers,Bob.

hi gertie, Just got home from travelling from wentworth to pooncarie, spent a few days at pooncarie, couple hundred nice big yabbys, upthe dirt to menindie lakes and camped out by the main weir on lake pamamaroo for 5 days and back home via the hill and the river land. Gods country right now, 300 yabbys att menindie. Dirt road from Pooncarie to Menindie is very corrogated right now but we still managed about 60 kmh. Trashed a pull down blind in one of my dometic windows, 3500 kg dirt road caravan but crap happenes out in that country. Talked to a local in menindie and he said the road up to wilcania was quite good. Take your time, the country is in really good nick, wildlife is breeding like hell and the lakes are full as a goog. Just the quickest 9 day break but in training for when it becomes full time next year. cheers mark

It's been raining for the 24 hours up the Bourke end which will drastically change conditions. If it was to stop raining now I would still give it a few days of sun to dry out and reopen. Not sure what the net says but I would put money on it be closed at this moment.

Hi

Drove from Cobar to Louth, then Tilpa, Mendinee, Pooncarrie. Stayed at some great places, Trilby Station just south of Louth was great, then Nelia Garri ( or loke that) about 60 km north of Mendindee. Both stations were great with excellent camping right in the river, very friendly and hospitable people.

I thought the roads were good but we did have an off road tralier. If its rains, don't even think about it though.

Another great spot is Pooncarrie, great camping on the river. Do go to the cafe near the old wharf, real character runs the show great food and banter.

have fun
