There are many preloved vans that fit your requirements and the good bit is that the bugs have been ironed out.
I suggest that you look at a slightly bigger van say around 18ft and the tare would run to around 1500kg.
The pic below is ours, when loaded to the max it weighs 2030kg weighbridge weighed. Is easy to tow and oh so comfortable for 2 grey nomads.

I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

Have you checked out the Expanda style of van? Jayco and Windsor make these and they are pop top and beds fold out at one or two ends. People seem very happy with these and the smaller ones should fit your weight requirement I think. You would find plenty of older pop tops that would be the right weight (my brother found a good 16 ft one and is happy) but they may not have a shower/toilet. Could you manage with a shower/toilet tent and porta potti? This would save a lot of weight. Lynne

I own a 2009 17ft Coromal Excell pop top double bed front kitchen (with fitted port-a-potti) great van but i need shower /toilet.
Expandas are heavier about 100kg more so not an option, the Jayco 16-55-2 is a good unit 1480kg but there must be others.
Just two of us slightly older.

Are you truly wedded to the Xtrail which is a severely limited tow vehicle?

Fair enough! So I would suggest you try posting your question on caravanersforum.com. You will possibly find a greater variety of vans and appropriate experience there. There are some interesting lighter weight vans around and some people with XTrails too so you may well find the assistance you are looking for on that forum. Good luck! Lynne
