Hi all

Currently in the process of planning some of next years trip which possibly includes leaving the van in Carnarvon and taking the tent out to Mt Augustua & Kennedy Range for a few days. This will most probably happen in May.

I know that we can camp at Kennedy Range but I'm unsure as to the best place to camp for Mt Augustus. Has any one any up to date information also is fuel available anywhere along the way.

Many thanks

Not sure if anything has changed John and Helen, but there was little choice but the caravan park at Mt Augustus. Never really good, it was reopened after a period of closure around last year, but no idea if any improvements have been made.

With Gascoyne Junction out of the picture, coming that way from Carnarvon and going via Landor there was only fuel at the Mt Augustus caravan park, and at Burringurrah community between Landor and Mt Augustus although we never went into the Burringurrah.

You can go via Cobra Station; as far as i know they are still open for business. Someone may have up to date news - if not, phone and to confirm they still have fuel and camping available - 08 9943 0565.

Thanks for the info, Motherhen. I have a feeling that Mt Augustus camp had been closed previously due to health concerns but it appears to be open again. If not it will have to be Cobra.

We just completed the trip from Carnarvon through to Kennedy Ranges and Mt Augustus and through to Meekatharra.

Just great, had a great trip. Mostly bitumen to Gascoyne Junction but gravel after that. Mostly the gravel is a good graded track - depending when the grader was through last. The Kennedy ranges has a simple campsite with some shade if you are lucky and serviceable drop toilets. There are a couple of walks that are fairly easy and one to the top that you would want to be prepared. The Kennedy Ranges are the oldest mountain range on planet earth.

Cobra station is - well - limited. Yes you can get fuel there but also 50km further on is Mt Augustus.

I quite liked Mt Augustus. They have made a good effort to have grassed areas to camp on and a nice little shop there. First time I found showers that where not self cleaning - I mean as you turn around in the cubicle you clean the walls. These ones where 1200mm wide - very nice. Did not check the other set of ablutions. Good hot water and good pressure.

When you get to Mt Augustus make sure you duck out to the sunset viewing spot (ask at kiosk) and take some cheese, wine, bikkies with you camera.

The walks around the Mt Augustus range from easy to severe. I chose not to go to the top - just too severe - and member of our party who did walk to the top where very sore for the next day.

The drive to Meekatharra was easy with some interesting historic stops.

I fueled up at Carnarvon and then only when I reached Meekatharra - still had another 300km in the tank so cannot speak of the fuel on the way.

Enjoy your trip

Cheers

Hi J&H.

If you're into something a bit more adventurous, the track over the Kennedies, west to east, is extra good four wheel driving with great views from the eastern side scarp. Plus if there's been reasonable late summer rains, the wildflowers on the top might start to be out.

See the management plan at http://www.dec.wa.gov.au/content/view/104/801/

Cheers.

Thanks JB.

We probably won't take that route but you never know. Will keep it in mind.
