Most sites are suggesting 2-3 hours, can anyone indicate how long and the best way.

Less than 2 hours (139 kilometres)

Head north up Main North Road and take the Gawler Bypass (basically straight on instead of left at Gawler turnoff) until you see a sign indicating Clare Valley to the left.

If you need specific directions type in RAA Travel Planner in Google, then enter Adelaide a point A and Clare as point B. You will see a map of the route and underneath specific directions. Both of these can be printed out so you have a hard copy.

Hi Bob

Good question and what you have been given is very wrong information.

Firstly when we have appointments in Adelaide, we always allow 2 hours from the time that we leave Clare until the time that we have to walk into where we have to go.

There are 2 main ways to travel, the first as Bill has listed and the second and preferred way that us locals go. The first way is by far the best scenery, but there are too many towns to have to slow down through and very few safe spots too pass.

This is the way we travel down to the big smoke.

Clare down to Auburn, then through to Halbury. Just before coming in Balaklava (Between the 80 kph and down to 60 kph and right before going over the Railway Line), we then head straight through to the Main Balaklava to Mallala Road ( this saves around 10 minutes rather than going right through the town of Balaklava)

From here is a straight through run to Mallala and then a short run down to Two Wells (again you do not go through the town. From here it is a straight through run to Gepps Cross (this location is what us country people refer to the northern limit for city drivers, and north of this and they get a nose bleed...LOL. This is aimed at the city reps that never venture out into the country)

In this way you will save a lot of time and you miss many of the small towns that slow you down when going Main North Road. Another important safety factor for the Main North Road way this that get stuck behind a truck and there are very few safe places to overtake and when behind very impatient drivers over the years, we have seen them overtake on the crest of hills, crossing double white line, around a bend with no clear vision of what is coming the other way etc. We advise anyone travelling is way and caught behind a slow vehicle, slow down and take your time and you will arrive later, but alive.

Enjoy our great Clare Valley.

Cheers

Hi Stephen

when I lived in Clare I always went via Blyth then Balak, but I was also at the Northern end.

Hi Mark

We always went the Blyth before the Halbury section was finally fully sealed. And yes going that way there are only 4 slow downs before hitting the main double lane highway at Two Wells.

Do I know you???

Hi olcoolone

Yes that way is very quick, but you still have to travel up Main North Road, with all those towns and far more traffic. The only main reason why trucks do not like our preferred route is going either through the Blyth Hills or the Halbury Hills.

Sorry MP...I'm gonna have to agree with Stephen. When I'm coming home from the Mid North in the truck I either turn off just south of Yacka and go through Snowtown, Locheil, Pt Wakefield etc....or I go back through Clare, I go straight through Seven Hill, Watervale, Auburn, Ryhnie, Tarlee, Roseworthy, Gawler bypass.

Trucks don't like the Blyth / Balak Road because it's narrow and has limited shoulders.

So like Stpehen said, if you want a quiet drive and avoid the heavy traffic, go through Blyth, Balak, Mallala, Two Wells, Pt Wakefield Road.

Fab.

Well the trip was good and no doubt the Northern Expressway as suggested by the RAA is the best way to go.
