The batery (spelling?) has just died in the TD cruiser and at theis stage I was going to buy two batteries now to offset the cost when I put the dual battery system in. There has been A lot of talk about them but was wondering if people would buy the orbital or gel or any of the other batteries to start the car and/or run
driving lights and other accessories (compressor fridge aux lighting etc) for extended trips.
I would like to hear about people's set-ups in their rigs and what sort of batteries they use any opinions appreciated?
Cheers
Charlie

Charlie,
I run a Desert King 17 plater for the engine start and a four year old Yuasa Overlander 17 plater as the auxilliary battery. I run a fridge, a winch and an inverter off the auxilliary and have a Rotronics battery management system. Everything works
well.

Thanks for the reply re bead breaking. Nah - think I'll pass on your very kind & thoughtfull offer to go back to split rims. Have a look back & see my response.
Tell me, where is the lovely spot the two of you are camped at with the tray top in your rig pic?
Cheers

Rick,
The pic was taken a couple of hundred metres down the gully to the east of
Artimore Ruin on the
Artimore PAR northeast of
Blinman. The fella with the white beard and his back to the camera is wellknown Central Australian Camel Man, Noel Fullerton. The others are his family. I took the pic. The ute is a 1980 Landy 110 V8.
Cheers,
Willem

I would be reluctant to put any sealed battery under my bonnet as the heat will kill them (as it does normal batteries) but they cost too much to have their life cut short.
Orbitals don't seem to have a very high Amp hour rating - if you want a large capacity in a AGM battery then checkout the powerdive batteries in
brisbane (that's what I use in my trailer) - www.powerdive.com
I run a Century N70ZZ for starting, a Federal deep cycle for auxillary (575 CCA and 90 Ah - very nice specs for a deep cycle - got it from battery world). A Rotronics independant charge system keeps the batteries under control. The powerdive AGM in the trailer is 100 Ah and is usually only charged on the mains at home, but my vehicle is setup with very heavy cable to an andersen plug in case I need to charge the trailer from the alternator on extended trips.

Charlie,
It is my understanding (being polite) that start batteries should accept high sudden discharge rates as when you start the vehicle eg 'cca' (cold cranking amps) and fridge battery should be more into the area of slow discharge over a long period of time eg 'a/h' the higher the number of 'amps per hour hour' the better, eg 80a/h is reasonable but 115 a/h is better.
The batteries look similar outside however are built differently internally and made for 2 different purposes.
The numbers tell the story, if it is rated at 115 a/h it is more powerfull than 65 a/h with the same credentials.
As for gel v wet batteries that is the Holden/Ford syndrome...
I use wet starter battery and 2 x Delcore Gel 80 a/h Deep Cycle batteries $130 ea with pirahna 150 amp isolator and have no hassles..
